#30DayMapChallenge 🗺️ (Day 4: Hexagons) Curious about Brisbane's green spaces? For Day 4 of the challenge, I've created a hexagonal map visualising our city's vegetation density using the Normalised Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI). This map divides Brisbane into hexagonal cells, each coloured to represent vegetation levels. Rich greens highlight areas abundant with plant life, while purple tones reveal less vegetated spaces. The contrast paints a fascinating picture of our urban landscape – from lush parklands and suburban forests to the sparser vegetation along the river and in built-up areas. Why hexagons? It aims to document the myriad forms this interplay takes, emphasizing a slow, deliberate approach to capture the nuanced textures, colours, and moods of Tasmania’s coastlines. "Coastal" is a visual, dynamic interplay between the terrestrial and aquatic realms of Tasmania. It adopts a meticulous methodology to document the varied expressions of this symbiosis, utilising a diverse palette of mediums. The Red-rumped Woodpecker (Dryobates kirkii) in this photograph was captured in the lush surroundings of San Pablo de Borbur, Boyacá, Colombia. This region, known for its rich biodiversity and diverse ecosystems, provided the perfect backdrop for this striking bird. The woodpecker, with its vibrant red rump contrasted against the subtler shades of its plumage, presented a dynamic subject in a natural setting. To capture this moment, I used a Canon camera paired with an RF 800mm lens and a 1.4x extender, pushing the effective focal length to 1120mm. Shooting at ISO 3200, 1/180 second, and f/16, I focused on maintaining clarity and detail in the low light conditions of the dense forest canopy. The Red-rumped Woodpecker is known for its adaptability to various habitats, ranging from tropical forests to open woodlands. This adaptability is a testament to its resilience and survival strategies. The species often uses its strong beak to drum on trees, a behavior not only used for foraging but also for communication. This particular shot captures the woodpecker in a moment of stillness, offering a rare glimpse into its vibrant world. The lighting conditions required careful adjustment to highlight the contrasting colors and textures of the bird’s feathers against the foliage, creating a balanced composition that draws the viewer’s eye to the bird's distinctive red rump. What makes this species particularly fascinating is its role in the ecosystem as both a predator of insects and a creator of nesting sites for other birds. By pecking into tree trunks to forage, they inadvertently create cavities that become nesting opportunities for other forest-dwelling species. This interconnectedness within their habitat emphasizes the delicate balance of ecosystems. My journey as a photographer has always been driven by a passion for uncovering these unique stories in nature. Each photograph I take is a careful blend of technical skill and a deep appreciation for the subjects I encounter. This image is more than a snapshot; it is a moment in the ongoing narrative of Colombia's remarkable biodiversity. In this new paper, we investigate the role of beach buildings on coastal dune development. Analysis of three different time and spatial scales shows that the deposition patterns caused by buildings on the small/monthly scale, get wiped out on the medium/seasonal scale due to human activity (bulldozers!). However, on the larger/decade scale, we see a strong non-uniform signal in dune development (dune tops growing less behind buildings) along a coastal stretch with multiple beach buildings. The contribution of buildings to this signal compared to, for example, beach entrances and bulldozers is still unclear. https://lnkd.in/gPGVQws6

Penguins live only in the Southern Hemisphere – everywhere from Antarctica to various remote islands and the southern coasts of Africa, Australia, New Zealand and South America. Have you ever visited the Pairi Daiza Zoo’s Penguin exhibit? This includes a four layer, printed ETFE cushion system by Vector Foiltec, allowing just the right amount of natural light. This was important in the design to help maintain a cold environment (under 7 °C) for the penguins, allowing them to adapt their natural behavior.
