  • Last week, CoreAI President Devesh Mishra and Keystone Co-Founder and Harvard Business School Professor Marco Iansiti shared a presentation on how broad AI models can fundamentally transform how businesses leverage data to make predictions and decisions. You can learn more about Keystone's capabilities building and deploying foundation-based AI here: keystone.ai/CoreAI

Last week at AI Elevate in Dubai, I had the privilege of sharing the stage with my Keystone AI colleague and AI transformation visionary Marco Iansiti. We presented on the evolution of foundation-based AI and how state-of-the-art broad AI models can transform enterprise prediction and decision-making, fundamentally changing how the modern-day enterprise operates. We believe the companies that will survive and thrive in the future will be powered by algorithmic automation that leverages robust, fine-grain data, freeing up employees to focus on higher-value work that further feeds the algorithm and ultimately drives sustainable competitive advantage. While in Dubai, we met with top-tier talent from all over the world and heard about the incredibly exciting work underway throughout the Middle East. Enterprises in every industry and category are ripe for transformation. I could not be more excited for the opportunities ahead. Thank you to the Digital Data Design (D^3) Institute at Harvard and HBS Club of the GCC for putting on this fantastic event.

  • Today, the UK Competition Appeal Tribunal published its judgement on the Le Patourel v BT collective claim. The claim alleged that BT abused its dominant position by charging unfair prices. The tribunal has found that BT’s prices were not unfair. Keystone Partner and expert Dr. Stefan Hunt served as the behavioural economics expert for BT contributing to the assessment as to whether the prices were unfair. Notably this is the first competition litigation case in the UK where behavioural economics testimony has been heard. The judgement can be found here: http://bit.ly/3P242Hd

Keystone Chief Scientific Advisor and Stanford University Professor Susan Athey recently joined a landmark Massachusetts Institute of Technology panel on AI's future alongside Sendhil Mullainathan (Economics and Computer Science Professor, MIT) and Daniela Rus (Professor, MIT and MIT CSAIL Director). As a part of BIG .AI@MIT 2024, their wide-ranging discussion, "A Leading Role for Research in Analyzing the Gains and Harms of GenAI," explored crucial questions about AI's impact on business and society. Among the many valuable insights shared during their conversation: 🤝 AI's greatest potential lies not in replicating human capabilities, but in discovering patterns humans cannot see — as demonstrated by an 80% improvement in cancer detection accuracy when combining AI with human expertise. ➡️ While AI excels at finding correlations, understanding true cause-and-effect relationships requires sophisticated experimental design and careful integration with domain expertise. 💻 Organizations should prioritize expanding their data infrastructure before implementing AI solutions, as successful deployment demands both quality data and sound human judgment. Watch the full discussion for a deeper exploration of these topics and many more insights on the future of AI in decision-making: https://bit.ly/4gGlnB5

With collaborators from the University of Virginia and the University of Washington, Keystone affiliate expert and UVA professor David Evans published important findings on AI security earlier this year. The research, presented at the Conference for Language Modeling in October, examines whether common methods for testing data privacy in large language models work as intended. The team found that standard privacy testing approaches may be less reliable than previously thought, with implications for how we evaluate and secure AI systems. This work offers crucial insights for organizations developing and deploying large language models. • Congratulations to Cooley LLP's Heidi Keefe, Phillip Morton, Mark Weinstein, Dena Chen, and Lowell Mead on their well-deserved recognition in The American Lawyer's Litigation Daily Litigator of the Week Runners-Up and Shout-Outs list! The team secured a precedential Federal Circuit victory for Meta Platforms, with the court upholding summary judgment on non-infringement grounds. We were honored to work with the Meta and Cooley teams, as well as Ravin Balakrishnan in this case. Ravin is a Keystone Field Expert and a Professor at the Department of Computer Science, University of Toronto where he co-directs the Dynamic Graphics Project (DGP) laboratory and served as the department’s chair from 2015-2019.

Keystone Chief Scientific Advisor and Stanford University Graduate School of Business professor Susan Athey recently published groundbreaking research on optimizing charitable giving through digital platforms. Through experiments with over 2 million PayPal users, her team found that small changes to online donation requests can significantly impact giving behavior. Working with PayPal's Giving Fund and Stanford's Golub Capital Social Impact Lab where Athey leads as Faculty Director, the research reveals how personalizing suggested donation amounts based on donor characteristics can help nonprofits balance multiple fundraising objectives. Today, December 3, is International Day of Persons with Disabilities, a UN designated observance to promote the rights and well-being of persons with disabilities at every level of society. As a part of observing this important day, Keystone was privileged to host Dr. Alyssa McGonagle, Associate Professor of Psychology and Organizational Science at University of North Carolina at Charlotte, for a discussion on chronic health conditions in the workplace. As chronic health conditions become increasingly common among working adults, organizations must understand and address the complex challenges these employees face. Professor McGonagle shared valuable insights on creating supportive workplace cultures and structures that enable all employees to thrive professionally. Keystone is committed to fostering an inclusive workplace where all colleagues can succeed, and we're grateful to Dr. McGonagle for helping advance this important conversation.
