With collaborators from the University of Virginia and the University of Washington, Keystone affiliate expert and UVA professor David Evans published important findings on AI security earlier this year. The research, presented at the Conference for Language Modeling in October, examines whether common methods for testing data privacy in large language models work as intended. The team found that standard privacy testing approaches may be less reliable than previously thought, with implications for how we evaluate and secure AI systems. This work offers crucial insights for organizations developing and deploying large language models. Google's DeepMind released a new study, "Evaluating Frontier Models for Dangerous Capabilities," investigating the risks of new AI systems, focusing on the Gemini 1.0 model. The research claims no strong evidence of dangerous capabilities but noted early warning signs. Google's internal evaluation is vital and exemplified. Nonetheless, to ensure AI systems are trustworthy and accountable, the establishment of independent external review bodies is crucial for verifying internal assessments and building trust and accountability towards AI systems.
