So I'm guiding my mother (pre-PC generation) on engaging ChatGPT... she's an oldschool academic; she wrote most her doctorate study on paper and researched hardback books from libraries. She's now facing a machine that was able to speak a summary of most complex works in seconds. So, what now? It's been life changing to follow the (Gen)AI journey with Boston Consulting Group (BCG) throughout the year traveling from one high stakes conversation to packed conferences all the way to course-defining summits- a crowning moment indeed at the Global AI Summit in Riyadh earlier. My personal favorite takeaway for this year is that AI is a human conversation- a lot more than we position it to be. Significant technological shifts set to evolve social fabrics in ripple effects that start by augmenting the day-to-day, really test our humanness- from self-perception and perpetration of bias to social contracts and the value/meaning of ethics, fairness, justice, sustainability, and community. When a technology so powerful, transformative, and so promising emerges, we naturally ask questions around who, how, and for what can this power be leveraged. This, one can argue, is an utmost test of our ability to come together, be bold and creative in visualizing the future, and most importantly collaborate. To set a course that creates fairness rather than widens inequalities, promotes sustainable value instead of exploitative or unhealthy work systems, and one that empowers and celebrates the individual, every individual, instead of building a world of averages. Yes---- the big title that sells on billboards today is "Human vs. Machine"- that's not accurate. Today, the Machine is asking: who are humans and what are they capable of?
