How did we do? Explore some of our 2024 achievements – in collaboration with our partners and thanks to the support of our donors – in our Impact Report.👇 Earlier this year we shared our 2023-2024 Impact Report, which includes our highlights in four important areas: ✅ Introducing #SafeAndJust science ✅ Moving people to demand action ✅ Incentivizing economic actors ✅ Demonstrating to upscale. As we move forward with a new strategy, we look forward to working closely with our partners to mobilize citizens, companies, cities and countries to continue this work in accelerating systems change, and becoming better guardians of the global commons. 👉 Read the report: https://lnkd.in/eACAnvA8

What do the #GlobalCommons mean to you? Laura Clarke OBE, CEO of ClientEarth says: "The global commons is our shared home, our shared heritage, our shared future – and we need to work together to protect it." 👇 From the Arctic sea ice to the Amazon rainforest, from critical ocean currents to our fresh water network, the global commons support the well-being of all life on Earth. 🌎 But now human actions have pushed the global commons out of balance. The climate, biodiversity, nutrient cycles and freshwater systems are already beyond the Safe and Just boundaries identified by science, with devastating impacts on nature, harvests, homes, livelihoods and people’s lives. 🏠⚠️ Safeguarding the global commons is urgent. And it is possible. It requires humanity to work together across sectors at all levels, to re-imagine and transform how we live our lives with nature – so all of us can thrive. 🌱 That is why the Global Commons Alliance exists. 🔗 Learn about how we are working to accelerate #SystemsChange and safeguard the global commons: https://lnkd.in/d5cBZEs

🌍 On November 27, the GCA Accountability Accelerator and the Laudes Foundation co-convened a discussion in Geneva, alongside the UN Business and Human Rights Forum, to explore policy, regulatory and industry strategies for advancing integrated corporate approaches for respecting nature, human rights and climate. Seven High-Level Reflections emerged from the event: 1️⃣ The international standards and policies including human rights law provide a basis to advance an integrated approach.. 2️⃣ Concerted efforts and a clever strategy are needed to advance an integrated approach in practice, which captures key elements of responsible business practice. 3️⃣ New and emerging regulations as ‘incentives’ for adopting integrated corporate actions. 4️⃣ Communicating the need for, and the benefits of, companies adopting an integrated approach is key. 5️⃣ Regulations and best practice industry standards are under attack. 6️⃣ New business models for companies to integrate human, nature and climate risks are needed. 7️⃣ An integrated group of actors is essential to get the best result. 💡 What’s next In 2025, the Accelerator will convene a community to discuss concrete opportunities for advancing integrated corporate actions for people and planet. 📄 Interested? 🌎 With global temperatures for 2024 expected to be the hottest on record, this year we were proud to share major research that reveals citizens of the world's largest economies want urgent action on climate and nature. 👇 The Earth4All 2024 Survey conducted by Ipsos UK, Earth4All and Global Commons Alliance, reflects widespread public concern across the 18 G20 countries (excluding Russia): 🔥 88% of respondents are worried about the state of nature today, and 87% are concerned about the state in which we’ll leave it for future generations. 🌪️ Over half of people surveyed (52%) feel very or somewhat exposed to climate and environmental risks. ⚠️ 59% are very or extremely worried about the state of nature today, and 69% believe Earth is close to climate and nature tipping points due to human activities. People know there’s an urgent need to safeguard our #GlobalCommons for current and future generations – and that the time for bold, systemic action is now. 🔗 Learn more and explore the results in full: https://lnkd.in/ebZFTCad #SafeAndJust #PlanetaryEmergency #Earth4All #ClimateAction #NatureAction

🆕 The environmental, social and economic crises – including biodiversity loss, water and food insecurity, health risks and climate change – are all interconnected and must be tackled together, states a new report from Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES).👇 Published this week, the report offers decision-makers the most ambitious scientific assessment ever undertaken of these complex interconnections, and outlines specific response options to reduce harm and maximize co-benefits. 🌎 Known as the ‘Nexus Report’, the Assessment Report on the Interlinkages Among Biodiversity, Water, Food and Health from IPBES finds that existing actions to address these challenges fail to tackle the complexity of interlinked problems and result in inconsistent governance. The report was approved on Monday by the 11th session of the IPBES Plenary, which is made up of representatives from 147 government members of IPBES, and is the product of three years of work by 165 international experts. 📙 The report also highlights the economic cost of failing to address the interlinked crises. More than half of global gross domestic product – over $50 trillion of annual economic activity around the world – is moderately to highly dependent on nature. 💰🌱 “But current decision-making has prioritized short-term financial returns while ignoring costs to nature, and failed to hold actors to account for negative economic pressures on the natural world. It is estimated that the unaccounted-for costs of current approaches to economic activity – reflecting impacts on biodiversity, water, health and climate change, including from food production – are at least $10-25 trillion per year,” said Prof. Pamela McElwee, co-chair of the Assessment. Jane Madgwick, Executive Director, the Global Commons Alliance, said: “The IPBES reports spotlight an underreported, and critical problem: the interconnected nature of the challenges facing humanity today. "The reports show the urgent need for a transformation in policies and governance that puts the global commons at the heart of how we use water, grow our food, and build resilience to climate, biodiversity and health shocks. This needs to happen at all scales, across all sectors, and locally as well as globally. “Thinking and acting in silos – as if biodiversity is disconnected from climate – only sets us up for failure. These reports are a wake up call for policy makers: planetary health is human health – they are one and the same – and we need to govern and act according to that principle.” 🔗 Read more: https://lnkd.in/dWpwspjv

"Amidst the big news stories, it’s easy to overlook many of the positive achievements, which are hard won along the way. Today, progress is expressing itself as a series of often quiet but still catalyzing moments, each one a thread in a giant blanket of collaboration. If we imagine it is 2050 and the regeneration of our planet is well underway, then looking back, 2024 was a pivotal year for Global Commons Alliance."
