Sustaining the Commons - rules, norms and shared strategies are the text of an institutional arrangement. But we have to understand the differences between them. Consequences of rules are important. Breaking the speed limit vs not performing the duty of voting. There maybe no consequences for not voting in many countries. Many ‘must’ and ‘must not’ are not rules - taking a photo in a museum maybe against a ‘’must not” but may have no consequences. Rules maybe shared strategies or norms. For ex., Must show ID to buy alcohol vs Please recycle. These need analysis in the institutional context. Dress codes, and such institutional statements or grammar tools that allow the analysis of rules, norms and shared strategies. If you use the microwave, you must clean up your own mess! Is there an ‘Or Else’? #sustainability #sustainingthecommons #tragedofthecommons #climate #climatechange #climateaction #climatesolutions #decarbonisation

In this article, Alice Whittaker, partner in the environment and climate group in Philip Lee, outlines how a new ‘stop the clock’ provision in the Planning and Development Bill 2023 is intended to operate, why it is being introduced, the risk of unintended consequences, and possible alternative solutions to minimise the risks of injustice in future planning judicial reviews under the Bill. Part 2 of the blog is now online! In this part, I analyse some regional and national cases that addressed the human rights obligations of states regarding adaptation to climate change. Thanks again to Human Rights Here for allowing me to share my thoughts!
🌍 Part 2 is out! In this two-part blog series, Martina Olivera argues that, given the inextricable link between climate change and human rights, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) must adopt a human rights perspective on state obligations related to adaptation to climate change. She explores how #international, #regional, and #national judicial sources should be integrated into its forthcoming advisory opinion. Good morning ASLA colleagues and friends! I’m so excited to share that I’m an #ASLAGameChangers finalist! In the wake of SCOTUS's ruling in City of Grants Pass v. Johnson, we are seeing firsthand the implications of policies and codes that actively weaponize the spaces we design to criminalize the frontline communities they support. If our work does not advocate for more empathetic approaches that consider the voices and identities that are not often heard or designed for, but are at the frontline of climate action, like the unhoused, are we complicit in the criminalization they experience in the 'public' spaces we design? If you share in this concern, or want to hear more, please watch my submission here: https://lnkd.in/gNSH6ffd Coupled with our commitment to climate action, I passionately believe that we must also be empowered to advocate for ALL community members that our work serves, and when the spaces we design are codified as platforms to unduly punish certain community members, specifically those who don’t have another option for shelter, I believe it is our duty to respond. With your support (by liking the video at the YouTube link above), I hope to bring this topic to #ASLA2024 Conference on Landscape Architecture this October in DC. These topics require our urgent and immediate attention, and what better timing or venue than Washington, DC in October of an election year to advocate! If my topic doesn’t resonate with you, I hope you will listen, vote and support any of the other amazing submissions on the ASLA YouTube channel, these are the ideas that will continue to shape and evolve the agency our profession! Voting is only open until tomorrow - Friday, July 26 at 2pm Eastern, so please head to the YouTube link above and like my video to help bring my big idea to #ASLA2024. My submission is titled: Leading with Empathy to Combat the (un)Intended(?) Consequences of Misguided Policy Initiatives. Thank you all for your continued support of this work and research!! On 15th October 2024, J&E hosted the conference in Brussels, focusing on the vital link between human rights and climate change. 🌍 This event, held at the EU Committee of the Regions, wrapped up the EU-funded DACE project, which sought to promote the emerging concept of climate rights. The conference brought together 150 participants from across Europe and highlighted the recent European Court of Human Rights rulings, affirming that climate protection is a fundamental human right. ⚖️ The event empowered legal actions and promoted policy-making that prioritises climate justice, fostering a collaborative approach to tackling climate-related challenges. 🤝 For more information, visit the full article: https://lnkd.in/dQVWUNE3 #ClimateRights #ClimateJustice #HumanRights #DACEProject #JusticeAndEnvironment #EU

We all agree on the intricate relation between peace and environmental affairs, there is plenty of evidence, within a wide range of epistemological approaches. What we need to see now is radical steps forward to support actions that turn the challenge into an opportunity for virtuous change, especially to foster the most vulnerable. That requires structural financial change, a grants based system within a redistribution approach, not additional debt or room for unethical and unsustainable growth. Equal Right
