About us

FFTA is a leading non-profit association in North America with a legacy of advancing best practices and advocating for policies that support families in their care and treatment for children. FFTA’s roots span back 35+ years, historically focusing on defining and promoting best standards in Treatment Foster Care, to advance the field’s understanding of effective methods for serving families. Our work today is at the intersection of both formal and informal mental health and child welfare service systems. This work is anchored in the importance of developing and nurturing supportive communities for all. We have nearly 500 member organizations from 47 states, as well as Puerto Rico, Bermuda, Canada, and Australia. Through 24 State FFTA Chapters, we support integration of local- and federal-level bast practices and policies. As an association, our vision is more communities where those who support families feel supported, and all are thriving. We leverage collective knowledge, proven solutions, innovation, and inclusion to advance wellness for all families and communities.

  • Two weeks ago, #FFTA Managing Director, Eric Giovanni, traveled to Indiana for The Strengthening Families Symposium, hosted by the University of Notre Dame’s Poverty Initiative. This symposium brought together scholars, practitioners, and policymakers for issue briefings and discussion sessions around several topics related to strengthening families: foster care; fatherhood; relationship education; child protective services; marriage, divorce, and family institutions; parenting & co-parenting initiatives. For each topic, scholars shared the current state of research and practitioners contributed perspectives from their day-to-day work with families. After participating Eric felt: - Inspired, by the shared commitment of so many scholars, researchers, practitioners, and policymakers to strengthen families and lift people out of poverty - Affirmed, by the genuine and deep care demonstrated by those from MIT to Notre Dame to Georgia Tech for the work we do every day in the child welfare and mental health sectors and the impact we have with communities around the country - Motivated, by the opportunity that FFTA has to help shape a research agenda, policy, and national discourse around the issues and challenges that are so important to our members - Encouraged, by the collaboration across disciplines and institutions. Eric loved seeing social workers ask questions about statistical analysis and researches wonder aloud how a study finding really plays out “on the ground.” The Poverty Initiative at the University of Notre Dame is committed to continuing this collaboration, and we look forward to FFTA’s continued participation #FFTA #FFTACommunity #commitment #collaboration #suport #childwelfare #mentalhealth
