CEO SUCCESSION’S WEAK POINT IS OFTEN THE BOARD. In today’s excellent article in Financial Times by Anjli Raval, she expertly explores the difficulties of executing successful CEO successions. Planning and executing a CEO succession is indeed a difficult affair. Beyond what Anjli points out in her excellent article, the exasperating factor is that the decision sits with the Board. Most Boards have unfortunately limited connection with the business and spend most of their time interacting with the most senior executives. Hence, the contest to be chosen by the Board to become the next CEO is often more of a beauty/talent contest than a fair assessment based on ability to generate new possibilities, mobilise an organisation into action and create a potent environment where people thrive and perform. Hence, the onus is on the Board in the lead-up to a succession, to meaningfully engage into the organisation to assess what the organisational impact will be of their decision. Too many times I have witnessed the choice of an executive that says all the right things, explains things well and has very insightful views on what needs/should happen. However, intellectual prowess is useless at CEO level unless it is combined with the ability to powerfully engage others and cause a generation of new possibilities, mobilisation of the organisation into action and the creation of a potent environment where people thrive and perform. https://lnkd.in/em4Z7G9q #leadership #firsthuman #succession #ceo
