Director, Community Concept and Health Equity Lead | Global thought leader in culture, belonging, and well-being in the built environment.

🚀 Celebrating Leadership in Neuroinclusive Design! Exciting news! We've launched the new Multisensory Design feature and the Support Inclusive Interior Navigation and Support Inclusive Building & Neighborhood Wayfinding feature parts in the WELL Building Standard and WELL Equity Rating. These innovations are redefining standards for inclusive, health-promoting environments and are live for you to view! It's essential to acknowledge the collaborative efforts that made this achievement possible. Our interior design working group was established over the last 18 months, co-created with HOK led by Kay Sargent along with numerous interior design leaders, academics, researchers, and related professionals who have practical and/or lived experience in this specialized area. We engaged in evidence-based discussions over several convenings. There are too many to name that were involved in this important work. If you were part of the working group, share this post and tag yourself as we celebrate this moment. Your dedication ensured that these design features cater to diverse sensory needs, supporting neurodivergent individuals and creating spaces where everyone can flourish! A special thank you to the IWBI team past and present! Big shout out to Kimberly Lewis Inkumsah, RENEE CHRISTENSEN, PhD, EDAC, WELL AP, WELL Faculty, Ethan Bourdeau, Charlotte Caldwell, and our CEO Rachel Hodgdon, whose significant contributions shaped these new strategies. Together, we are laying the foundation for a healthier, more inclusive future.🌟 I’m excited to share more details about creating these strategies and some of my favorite elements in upcoming posts...stay tuned! #Neuroinclusion #Neurodiversity #InclusiveDesign #WellBeing #WELL #WELLEquityRating #EquityInDesign #SocialSustainability #Designresearch #CommunityEngagement #Strategies #Innovation #AccessActionAccountability #TheWork #EvidenceBasedDesign

Yesterday I posted my LinkedIn Rewind card along with my own assessment of how accurate it was. TL;DR (what!!??): The Rewind summary was decent but that there was a major omission that would receive its own post. Which is this one. ⁉️ How'd you miss my dog, dawg? He's my closest co-worker and makes public appearances, including on live episodes and LinkedIn posts. 🧠 / 💙 / 🤖 What drove this failure of the AI -- was it a problem with its mind, or with its heart? Or maybe you think it's not appropriate to include my dog in my work life in which case I'd say, are you, um, a robot? (A-ha!) #️⃣ Or, maybe it's just quantitative and I didn't post about him enough. If so, challenge accepted. Glad to post more of Phife Dawg going forward, a virtual award tour so he's never overlooked again! Here he is getting ready to kick off a video call. Julie Johnston (who always gets tagged in posts like these) is pictured on the call with her CEO and spiritual guru. (Link to yesterday's post in the comments.) #work #dog #advisor

One of my favorite quotes, which I don't know the origin or exact original wording of, is, "We judge ourselves by our own best intentions. Others judge us by our worst actions." Even if that quote isn't true in all cases, in part because sometimes we're overly harsh on ourselves rather than too sanguine, I think it's a good reminder to be aware about how we formulate our self-image and about the certainty that our self-image will diverge from what others see. In any event, that's the spirit in which I finally did the dang LinkedIn Rewind thing. How would the machine summarize my year as opposed to how I'd summarize it -- even if I limited myself (somehow) to what I had written on LinkedIn? 🌎 One object lesson: Be mindful about what I put on LinkedIn *globally*. What am I posting about and in what proportions and what am I not posting about? It's a useful heuristic to think about that concept we all love, hate, or both...our brand. ⚖️ Overall, the main AI summary is plausible. I DID end up talking a lot about inclusive spaces this year. Fair enough that it was given primacy. (That was by virtue of being identified as my "superpower," which, sure, I'll go with that label. And, to potential future clients: progress has been made on using space to embody and drive inclusion but we are nowhere near evolved enough. I help with that in targeted, MEASURABLE ways that will make you and your organization stand out. DM if you want to hear about the methodology I use for this.) 👏 And I'm thrilled that the AI picked up on something I try to repeat often. See my Top Quote for that. HECK YES. Ensuring we have the correct mental model of what universities and colleges are is one way we can become student-centered in how we design spaces, technology, and processes. It also promotes the empiricism that is sometimes lacking, a great growth area for institutions. 🤷♂️ I'm not listing the suggested post that the AI came up with. It wasn't totally off -- yes, institutional-level strategy about VR and AR in teaching is something I co-presented on, probably commented on, and will continue to do going forward -- including a cool workshop option derived from the presentation I did at Tradeline, Inc. with Dan Munnerley of ASU Next Lab. 🍄 But it also had at least one hallucination -- I posted about something I saw but it gave me credit for having designed what I merely observed and celebrated. Namely, prominent signage for a lactation room at Rowan University, which I noticed when I was on campus as part of campus master plan stakeholder engagement sessions. 🎤 And, finally, because I don't mention specific clients just out of discretion -- not because they're always secret -- the summary talks more about speaking/writing and less about my consulting with Co|Here Campus and Workplace. Such as the campus planning with a great client noted above. 😱 Oh, and the AI summary committed a major exclusion that will get its own post. Standby! #highered #workplace

I think it's understandable to be afraid to say the wrong thing when we're talking about inclusion and people's various needs and preferences that might differ from ours. But, we have to, especially if you are in a position of leadership and influence. Enjoyed discussing this on the YAROOMS podcast and explaining the advice I give to clients of Co|Here Campus and Workplace. #inclusion #leadership #planning

Leadership is about taking risks and having the courage to engage in uncomfortable conversations. 💭 In our latest Workplace Whiz episode, Cosmin Patlageanu and our guest Chris Morett explore how embracing diversity and inclusion starts with showing up, speaking up, and listening to what people truly need. 🤗 🌟 🎧 Listen to the full conversation Youtube - https://lnkd.in/ex7viMCW Apple Podcast - https://lnkd.in/eNPW7QQe Spotify - https://lnkd.in/e6uVkWFb

I like to post examples sometimes of the factors that do, or could, differentiate a formal course of study with an institution (note I'm not using the term "two- or four-year degree, although that's what "a formal course of study" often means in practice), versus shorter credentials, etc. Shorter hits have their use for sure, especially for specific career skills, but some things require more time and exposure with students to develop them intellectually, personally, etc. Colleges and universities are uniquely positioned for this kind of thing. In this case, it's thinking about and acting on the risk that AI might drive cognitive decline at the species level, even if it has advantages too. Article in Forbes from Chris Westfall - link in comments. Conveying this to students and empowering them to act on it is something that prolonged, coordinated tutelage is probably needed to accomplish. I'd hasten to add that, in addition to the social benefits of students becoming aware of this, there are career benefits too. The question is how to make sure we recognize these benefits and price them in. I'd also note that institutions are also uniquely positioned to help ensure the potential for AI to advance human cognition is also recognized, developed, and implemented. This post was written by an AI application. Just kidding. #AI #highered #informationliteracy

A couple related points about inclusion and accessibility that came up when I was a guest on the YAROOMS Workplace Whiz podcast with Cosmin Patlageanu. 1️⃣ Design is part of achieving these goals. But they'll never happen if we don't pay more attention to how we ACTIVATE space: assigning, scheduling, and programming it. 2️⃣ There must be a plan AT THE INSTITUTIONAL/ORGANIZATIONAL LEVEL to activate space in a way that promotes and embodies inclusion. 3️⃣ I enjoyed talking about this, partially in the context of how hybrid work poses risks to accessibility and inclusion, on the pod. I'm a big fan of hybrid work -- we just need to identify and mitigate its unique risk profile in terms of accessibility and inclusion. 🆘 Want to find out how your organization is doing on this front? DM me and find out what targeted, practical recommendations Co|Here Campus and Workplace can provide. The cost of not addressing these issues is high, and unnecessary. Thanks to Eglė Pačebutaitė for all her work in preparing for the podcast and Ryan Owens for orchestrating. Link to full episode in comments. #accessibility #inclusion #workplace
