⚡ Europe’s Electrification: Falling Behind the Goals ⚡ Thrilled to share insights from the latest #CleantechRealityCheck, a collaboration between Breakthrough Energy , Cleantech for Europe, and Systemiq Ltd. This timely report underscores an urgent truth: Europe’s electrification revolution is stagnating. Electricity demand has plateaued at 22% of final energy use since 2010, far from the 37-40% needed by 2030. The report highlights #3 critical #enablers to unlock progress: 🔋 Long Duration Energy Storage (#LDES): Only 3.7 GW are under development vs. the 65 GW required by 2030. 🔌 #GridModernization: Investments must double to support renewables and electrification. ♨️ #IndustrialHeat #Electrification: Just a fraction of the progress needed has been achieved. Europe’s challenge lies in connecting the dots: abundant clean electrons ⚡, resilient grids, and electrified industrial processes. As the EU prepares its #CleanIndustrialDeal, coordinated and accelerated action is essential to meet climate goals and secure industrial competitiveness. 📘 Explore the full report for actionable insights: https://lnkd.in/devR2MGc. ⚡ Think Europe is Electrifying? Think Again ⚡ ✍️ By Ann Mettler and Julia Reinaud Europe routinely speaks about ‘electrification’ as if it is happening. But data 📊 tells a different story: demand is flat – and has been for years [📈 see chart in the pictures]. In other words: the much-touted electrification revolution in Europe is (so far) failing to materialize. Despite ambitious rhetoric 🎙️ and policy initiatives 📜, the stark reality is that Europe 🇪🇺 is not rising to the occasion and does not currently have the speed 🏃♂️ and scale 🌉 required to meet its targets and is nowhere near China’s electrification drive 🚀🇨🇳. This is yet another example of a divide between assumptions 🤔 and on-the-ground realities. This disconnect has very serious spillover effects: with so little additional demand for electric-based technologies ⚡🔋 and long queues ⏳ to connect to the electricity system, there isn’t the necessary boost to provide the abundant and affordable clean electrons ⚡ that industry needs to decarbonize. And manufacturing sectors are hurting, too. Despite our supposedly ambitious clean energy transition and renewable targets, our home-grown wind sector is on its knees. Yet another indicator that we need to stress-test the presumably inevitable trajectory towards electrification. At the root of this issue is a disjointed policy plan: while going all in on renewables for years, there has only very recently been an accompanying strategy for energy storage and grid modernization. This is an essential piece of the puzzle 🧩 because as we all know: the sun doesn’t always shine 🌞 and the wind doesn’t always blow 🌬️. The seeming inability to think of – and build towards – a modern energy system means that storage and grids are now lagging far behind. Moreover, the rollout of renewables has been uneven with much faster deployment of solar, de-coupled from wind. It will be imperative that the EU’s (existing) Grid Action Plan and (forthcoming) Electrification Strategy provide an honest stock-take 🧐 that includes a more holistic approach. They need to connect the dots 🔗 between a volatile energy system ⚡, squeezed industry 🏭, and the clean technology enablers that can provide solutions to both – such as Long Duration Energy Storage 🔋 to absorb and use these clean electrons at all times, and Thermal Energy Storage 🔥 to electrify Industrial Heat as flexible demand. The bottom line is that much of Europe’s approach simply doesn’t add up ➕❌ and therefore calls for an urgent stress test 🛠️ Our latest Cleantech Reality Check on electrification 📘, created with Cleantech for Europe and with analytical support from Systemiq Ltd. provides real-time feedback from European policymakers, providing a clear-eyed view of the obstacles on the ground and aggressive policy responses to them. Manager - Europe chez Breakthrough Energy

What a day yesterday for critical raw materials (CRMs) for Breakthrough Energy partners during the EU #RawMaterialsWeek!✨   🔹 We kicked things off with the launch of the Critical Raw Material Supply-Side Innovation Roadmap for the EU Energy Transition—developed by Systemiq Ltd. with the support of Breakthrough Energy and the Energy Transitions Commission, featuring insights from Minviro, S&P Global and Benchmark Mineral Intelligence. Curious? Read more here 📥 https://lnkd.in/eeUhUh5b   🔸 To build on the report launch, a vibrant event organized by Systemiq Ltd. sparked rich discussions on how the EU can scale these innovative technologies. Thanks to I•ROX, Tokai COBEX, Vianode, Vulcan Energy, Latitude Five, Quadrature Climate Foundation, European Investment Bank (EIB), TechMet-Mercuria SA for your insights.   🔹 We also saw an engaging conversation at the Jacques Delors Institute side event on how to finance a secure and responsible supply of the critical raw materials needed for the green transition. Thanks to InfraVia Capital Partners, T&E and European Commission for your contributions. 🔸Finally, IRMA Initiative for Responsible Mining Assurance 's event brought together Anglo American, WindEurope, Business & Human Rights Resource Centre to discuss what responsible sourcing standards imply for different stakeholders, and how it must be done at all levels.   ⁉️ Why is the timing so critical ⁉️ 1️⃣ On the private side, decisions are being made NOW across value chains, especially in the battery sector - the main driver of CRM demand - as illustrated by yesterday's positive news from Franco-German battery maker ACC - Automotive Cells Company. 2️⃣ On the public side, we have a new European Commission which is eager to turbocharge investment in competitive, clean industrial supply chains, so NOW is a good time to bring forward a compelling case on how this can be done. 3️⃣ We must prevent a paradox: ensuring that the materials powering clean technologies such as batteries are produced responsibly to avoid exacerbating emissions and environmental impacts to get them.   The momentum is building. Let’s keep pushing for sustainable solutions! 💡⛏️🔋 #CriticalRawMaterials #EnergyTransition #EU #Sustainability

Direct Air Capture is not science fiction. It's technology that can help address emissions and it's becoming a reality at scale. When our team met with Breakthrough Energy and Bill Gates earlier this year, we discussed how 1PointFive is bringing Direct Air Capture technology to life, the potential economic opportunities provided by large scale hubs like the one we're planning in South Texas, and approaches to accelerate innovation in the sector. These discussions with industry leaders are critical to advancing technology and helping achieve climate targets. Read more on Bill’s thoughts about the climate transition: https://lnkd.in/gYh_BHtC

Deep Sky's 2024 in a nutshell: - First DAC facility begins construction in Alberta, on track to deliver carbon removal credits in Spring/Summer 2025. ✅ - Microsoft and RBC purchase our first carbon removal credits.  ✅ - Carbon storage studies are underway in Québec. ✅ - Tripled world class team.  ✅ - Already planning 3 commercial facilities. ✅ - And now…we’ve secured a $40M USD grant from Breakthrough Energy Catalyst, bringing our total amount raised to more than $130M.  ✅ The funds, subject to the satisfaction of funding conditions, will be allocated to the construction of Deep Sky Alpha (formerly Deep Sky Labs) and its associated research and testing of direct air capture (“DAC”) technologies. This marks Breakthrough Energy Catalyst’s first-ever investment in both a Canadian and Direct Air Capture (DAC) project, offering an incredible vote of confidence in Canada to become the carbon removal capital, in DAC technology as a tangible climate solution, and in Deep Sky for its ability to scale rapidly. We’re honored, humbled, and more unapologetically ambitious than ever. Read more:
