Direct Air Capture is not science fiction. It's technology that can help address emissions and it's becoming a reality at scale. When our team met with Breakthrough Energy and Bill Gates earlier this year, we discussed how 1PointFive is bringing Direct Air Capture technology to life, the potential economic opportunities provided by large scale hubs like the one we're planning in South Texas, and approaches to accelerate innovation in the sector. These discussions with industry leaders are critical to advancing technology and helping achieve climate targets. Read more on Bill’s thoughts about the climate transition: https://lnkd.in/gYh_BHtC

"They work. They are commercially viable." However: • Currently, #𝗗𝗔𝗖 captures about 𝟬.𝟬𝟬𝟬𝟬𝟯% of global #CO2emissions, given that it captures around 0.01 million metric tons of CO2 per year out of the total 37 billion metric tons of CO2 emitted globally each year. • Capturing CO2 from the air is the 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲 application of carbon capture. The CO2 in the atmosphere is much more dilute than in, for example, flue gas from a power station or a cement plant. This contributes to DAC’s 𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱𝘀 and 𝗰𝗼𝘀𝘁𝘀 relative to these applications. So, the question might not be if DAC can work, but, if this method is economically viable and can make significant difference in CO2 concentration in atmosphere in the long run, and compete with other technologies. For example, what would be total energy required to remove from atmosphere annual CO2 emissions using DAC? DAC is energy-intensive, requiring around 8.5 gigajoules (GJ) of energy to capture one metric ton of CO2. To capture 37 billion metric tons of CO2, one would need approximately 314 billion gigajoules (GJ) of energy.

I love to see the "other" Lakeside graduate working to move DAC forward -:)

South Texas is where SpaceX is headquartered. It would be great if Bill Gates and Elon Musk worked together
