We talk a lot about the value we provide to our clients and their families. And we do provide a lot of value – independence, autonomy and connection for our clients and peace of mind and backup for their families. But the value we provide to our Nabors is equally compelling. We know that most Nabors have a heart for service and are seeking purpose and a sense of giving back. Oftentimes they are filling a void in their own life, having recently become an empty nester or retiring from their career. Below is a moving story of one of our Nabor’s journey.
Ken Green applied to be a Nabor in July 2021. His application and interview went swimmingly until he got up to leave and took a flip phone out of his pocket. We had to let him know that unfortunately he would have to have a smart phone as everything runs through our Nabor App. We assumed that was the end of that. Well, later that afternoon, we got a call from an excited Ken Green letting us know that he just left the Apple store and was now the proud owner of a new iPhone!
Ken began going on visits with clients, providing neighborly help in many different ways - everything from driving one client to a senior center several days a week, to helping a client prepare meals to simply providing companionship. He was very professional, reliable and well-liked by clients. Over nearly two and a half years, Ken went on hundreds of visits, bringing joy to numerous clients until his time as a Nabor abruptly came to an end last year. On a warm, fall Sunday, Ken had a visit where he took a client and her dog to the groomer and then the three of them took a walk around the pond at Deep Run Park. As he was getting into his car to return home, he had a heart attack and passed away. Ken was 81.
Devastating to his family, friends and clients for sure. But, his wife sent us a note with a link to his obituary, and there was his smiling face right in front of the Naborforce banner. She told us that she felt at peace knowing Ken died doing something he loved. She went further to say that being a Nabor was “the source of his own healing after 2 years of deep grief from the sudden loss of his eldest son,” who had died 4 years prior. She said it allowed it Ken to “safely return to life and helping others, which proved to be a connection to his purpose for the previous 40 years.”
We are so blessed at Naborforce to be able to witness the good side of humankind every day – and to be able to provide a platform to promote it. #agingwell #community #purpose #agetech
