Adult children are deeply worried about their aging parents feeling lonely. In a recent survey, they prioritized having a resource to keep their parents engaged and connected over assistance with household tasks or rides to appointments. Families are rightly concerned about their aging loved ones’ social engagement. It has been well-documented that loneliness can be as deadly as heart disease or diabetes. Older adults face increased risk of loneliness and social isolation due to factors like distance from family, the loss of friends, and reduced social interactions from giving up driving. Surprisingly, even those living in lively senior living communities can still experience loneliness. As our Surgeon General, Dr. Vivek Murthy, emphasizes, “We are called to build a movement to mend the social fabric of our nation. It will take all of us. Answer that phone call from a friend. Make time to share a meal. Listen without distractions. Perform an act of service. The keys to human connection are simple yet profoundly impactful.” Or, as one of our Nabors beautifully put it, “It’s the ministry of being present. #socialisolation #loneliness #community #agetech

Loneliness can be more than a feeling for the elderly; it's a silent crisis. Imagine your golden years shadowed by isolation instead of cherished moments. Social circles often shrink due to retirement, mobility issues, or the loss of loved ones, leading to a significant rise in loneliness among elders. This isolation can have severe impacts on mental and physical health, increasing the risk of depression, anxiety, and even chronic diseases. But it doesn't have to be this way. Communities, families, and caregivers play a crucial role in bridging the gap and bringing warmth back into the lives of our elderly. Simple actions like regular visits, phone calls, or involving them in community activities can make a world of difference. In just a mere second of a social interaction can dramatically increase an elderly person's mood. Even the thought of knowing there is something to look forward to can do the same. Let's commit to making our elderly feel seen, heard, and valued. Because everyone deserves to spend their golden years surrounded by love and companionship. #elderlylove #socialtime #companionship

For the growing number of us with aging parents, I'm sure this is no surprise: loneliness and social isolation are serious issues for older adults. For older adults, such isolation exacerbates challenges they already face with mental and physical health. Relatives and siblings try to help fill the void, but it's hard for them to address the deeper feelings of loss and disempowerment that lead to isolation (like losing ability to drive). While technology can help address isolation, it can also deepen the sense of being left behind when older people struggle to learn and use today's devices (like my mom). Important for all of us, as we get older, to protect our social health as much as our physical and mental health -- stay connected, find ways to be involved in your community, learn to use online resources (and that includes how to avoid scams!), be honest with your doctor and relatives about your feelings.

Information disseminated through the Consumer Information Initiative focuses on: -Maintaining health, wellness, social engagement and active aging -Managing chronic health conditions, and/or the demands of caregiving -Living as independently as possible in all types of housing or residential settings -Making informed decisions associated with age-related life changes, events, challenges and opportunities https://lnkd.in/gFPQ6MX5
