When facing boundary issues as a life coach, I practice self-care by first getting clear on my limits and reinforcing them with clients respectfully but firmly. I remind myself that protecting my time and energy is essential for providing the best support. This includes setting clear working hours, sticking to agreed-upon boundaries, and avoiding overextending myself. I also prioritize regular self-care routines, like journaling, mindfulness, or physical activity, to recharge and stay grounded. Reflecting on my boundaries through supervision or peer support helps me process challenges and gain perspective. By practicing what I encourage in clients—balance, self-respect, and rest—I maintain my well-being and effectiveness as a coach.

When I coach it often feels like guiding a client through darkness to light. We share the darkness and I feel my client's emotions - knowing well they are not my own. I use my inner light to guide the client to their light. If I happen to internalize my client's emotions, my inner light goes dim and I'm not as good of a guide to my client. There is a big difference between feeling the client's emotions and taking them in. Being aware of what's mine and what's theirs is my boundary.

When facing boundary issues as a life coach, I first look at what boundaries might be impacted and why they’re in place. Self-compassion is key here — acknowledging that boundary challenges are an opportunity to grow, not a sign of failure. Every client who tests boundaries is, in a way, a teacher helping us strengthen those “boundary muscles” and gain fresh clarity. Before each session, I suggest centring and grounding oneself to bring one's best self to the coaching space. After each session, I think it's important to reflect — celebrating what went well, acknowledging areas for growth, and identifying improvements for next time. This helps focus on progress while staying open to further growth.

Schedule Downtime: Block time in your calendar for rest, hobbies, and relaxation. 3. Practice Mindfulness: Engage in meditation or journaling to process emotions and maintain clarity. 4. Seek Support through sharing work peers and mentees. 5. Being Assertive: Politely decline commitments that overwhelm or don’t align with your capacity. 6. Focus on Health: Prioritize sleep, nutrition, and exercise for physical and mental well-being. 7. Regular Reflection through journaling.

Practicing self care starts from self. once you start doing things that truly enrich you, you start to grow. That's the essence of life.

We have to have empathy with our clients, it’s a part of coaching. I can laugh with my clients and cry with my clients but I leave our discussions “at the door” so to speak. I then practice self care and mindfulness for myself.
