When coaching clients from diverse cultural backgrounds, I see each session as an opportunity to honor and integrate their unique perspectives. The strategies I apply are; I like to start with a little homework before the session to understand the cultural background of the client for effective communication. When the client is present for coaching I focus on understanding their experiences to open lines of communication and creating a healthy space. I then help them set their goals in line with their cultural framework understanding their beliefs and values to achieve their goals.

While I was in Nigeria with TBWA as Creative Director, I tailored coaching sessions for clients from various cultures by understanding their cultural nuances and communication styles. I researched their backgrounds, adapted my communication, and built trust by showing genuine interest. I stayed flexible, practiced active listening, provided clear instructions, and sought regular feedback. Continuous cultural sensitivity training also enhanced my skills. These strategies created an effective coaching environment that respected and leveraged the diverse backgrounds of my clients.

One of the great things growing up where I did in NZ is how there was such a mix of people from different cultures. It grew larger as time went on and being around different cultures and knowing lots of people allows you an opportunity to ask for advice from people you know. Grow your social circles and you could be lucky enough to have someone to help give you a better understanding of others.

Throughout my career, I’ve tailored coaching sessions to resonate with clients from diverse cultural & linguistic backgrounds. Leveraging my polyglot skills, I ensure clear communication & understanding by addressing language barriers directly. I meticulously research cultural norms & professional nuances, designing sessions that are relevant & relatable. My holistic approach combines deep knowledge across disciplines with empathetic listening, fostering an environment where clients feel valued & inspired to achieve their goals. One of my trademarks is welcoming each of the clients in their native language. I send Birthday greetings to my 30,000 LinkedIn first-level connections in their native language EVERY day.

I’d take the time to understand each client’s cultural background, values, and communication preferences. By adapting my approach to be respectful of their unique perspectives, I can build rapport and create a more personalized coaching experience. I’d also incorporate culturally relevant examples, be mindful of language barriers, and ensure an inclusive environment where they feel comfortable sharing and learning.

This is challenging—I’ve made mistakes. Fortunately, I’ve learned and gotten better. To be effective as a coach, you must move beyond surface-level information about the culture and attain real knowledge. Don’t fake it. Call out ambiguity, ask questions, and approach every session with humility and curiosity.
