To build trust and transparency within your team, encourage open and honest communication through regular team meetings and one-on-one check-ins.

In a project where communication issues were causing delays, I initiated regular open dialogue sessions, which allowed team members to voice concerns freely, ultimately building trust and improving collaboration.

Start by creating a safe space where team members feel comfortable sharing their thoughts and concerns without fear of judgment or retribution!

Lead by example: Show your vulnerability. Practice talking about feelings. Subject matter problems are far easier to solve when feelings can flow rather than being blocked.

A cool and quick exercise that teams can do is attempt to paraphrase the opposing coworker's viewpoints on a sheet of paper, along with actively pointing out that coworker's primary values or concerns. Sometimes, making tangible efforts to "live in" your critic's arguments allow for empathy to take route. That exercise does just that because it requires you to temporarily drop your argument and represent the other person's position accurately. Taking note of how your emotions and feelings shift throughout this process is very valuable as well, because disagreements aren't solely formed by a difference in logic, but also how that diverse perspective makes you feel as well. This inspires integration and healthy dialogue moving forward.

The first step to solving communication issues is creating an environment where open dialogue is encouraged. - I’ve found that when team members feel safe to voice their thoughts and concerns, barriers start to break down. It’s like opening the windows in a stuffy room - fresh air brings in clarity. - Regular check-ins and team meetings where everyone has a voice help foster this open dialogue, paving the way for trust and transparency.

Communication is a two-way street, and active listening is crucial. I make it a priority to truly listen to my team, not just to respond but to understand. It’s amazing how much more effective our communication becomes when people feel genuinely heard. It’s like tuning into the right frequency - suddenly, everything comes in clearer. This practice builds trust because team members know their input is valued and respected.

Listening is great - speaking up is important, too. See conflict as natural part of working together. Rather than avoiding conflict, learn how to handle conflicts in a way that enhances trust and brings team members together.

Es muy importante saber escuchar, si un líder no sabe escuchar, no podrá lograr un equipo unido y potenciar sus habilidades. Es escuchar es un arte que se va aprendiendo con la experiencia de vivencias laborales así como personales. Es importante tomar cursos de habilidades blandas ya que nos hace aprender diferentes métodos para mejorar nuestra escucha activa.

Before giving feedback, see your own part in the game. Sometimes you will want to try changing your own behavior before giving feedback. And sometimes, just by being aware of your own part, the feedback you give will land much better.

A culture of constructive feedback helps in addressing communication gaps before they become issues. I’ve cultivated a feedback-friendly environment where giving and receiving feedback is seen as a positive, growth-oriented process. It’s like having regular maintenance checks on a car - it keeps everything running smoothly. By normalizing feedback, we ensure that misunderstandings are quickly corrected, and communication lines remain open and clear.

Nothing undermines trust more than mixed messages. I strive to maintain consistency in my communication, ensuring that the same message is delivered across all channels. It’s like setting your GPS before a journey - everyone needs to be on the same page to reach the destination. Consistent messaging helps to align the team’s understanding and expectations, reducing confusion and building a foundation of trust.

Each team member has specific communication preferences. Putting in the effort of finding out whom to best reach how is well worth it. Some prefer written, some spoken messages. Some prefer groups, some 1:1. Some enjoy stories, some switch off if numbers are missing. Consistency is important and works best in a flexible, somewhat individual way.

Make sure you trust yourself first. If you do not, your team can exercise all you want, it will always feel there is something off. Building trust takes time and effort, so be patient with yourself and your team. Trust cannot be enforced. Invite it :-).
