Also, let them know that building resilience comes from embracing challenges without being too hard on themselves. It’s an excellent idea for them to lean on their mentors, colleagues, or friends; reaching out for advice or encouragement can bring in fresh perspectives and help boost their confidence.

When working with clients experiencing setbacks, I create a safe and supportive environment where they can process their experiences, express fears, frustrations, and disappointments without judgment. I guide them through self-reflection exercises to help them identify the past challenges they’ve overcome. I work with my clients to create personal action plans that support coping, self-care, and goal setting and readiness to face future challenges. We explore their professional identity by revisiting their core strengths, skills, and values. This reframing helps clients see setbacks as opportunities for growth and reinvention rather than failure. Finally, we map out actionable steps, ensuring they feel empowered and focused.

I asked, “What did this experience teach you about your strengths and areas to grow?” Slowly, they identified overlooked achievements and set new goals. While empathy is crucial, it must extend beyond mere platitudes to actionable support & care through tangible assistance fosters trust and resilience. Encourage clients to embrace their tenacity and remind them of their unique strengths, rationales to weather their storms. Spirituality offers solace, framing challenges as opportunities. Ultimately, the bonds forged in adversity are profound, lasting far beyond transient moments of joy. As Maya Angelou stated, “I can be changed by what happens to me. But I refuse to be reduced by it.”

They reopened as a delivery-only service and thrived. Reframing struggles sparks creativity. Goals: A financial planner client overwhelmed by debt took small steps—budgeting weekly instead of monthly. It made recovery feel achievable. Baby steps lead to giant leaps. Self-Care: A stressed CEO I worked with started morning walks and unplugging from work at dinner. Their focus and decisions improved. You can’t pour from an empty cup. Empathy + action = resilience!

Empathize and explore the emotions it's usually a great place to start to give space to the client to feel heard and process their emotions and frustrations. Normalize the setbacks as part of the journey: on every learning process there are some FAILs (First Attempt Into Learning). These are opportunities to learn and assess what gain we have accomplished already and build on that ability to plan the next small step towards their goal. Finally explore with them, what ideas they could think in order to process future setback, to reinforce their self-esteem, self-reliance, and self-regulation.
