As a leader we should have a private conversation with the individual to understand their situation better, approach the discussion with empathy and without judgment, plus help him understand the importance of maintaining professionalism in the team setting and offer support.

I often hear, “Leave personal problems outside of the office.” While ideal, it doesn’t quite apply to my industry or workplace. As an expat, I know many of my colleagues are far from family and friends, often lacking a support system. I believe showing empathy, listening to their concerns, and offering help when possible—just as a family member would—is essential. Supporting each other in this way fosters a caring environment, strengthens team bonds, and ultimately enhances our work. Empathy in the workplace isn’t a weakness; it’s a crucial strength for creating a supportive, effective team.

We need to have a balanced approach to handle this sensitive situation: 1. Have a private, empathetic conversation. 2. Set clear work boundaries. 3. Make a specific improvement plan. 4. Support the team discreetly. 5. Follow up regularly. Focus on solutions while respecting privacy.

As a leader, we need to deal with difficulties effectively and with active listening and analysis of the whole, understand and try to identify the root cause, define an action plan together with the associate and carry out monitoring within a defined period!

Start by fostering a strong sense of purpose and trust among team members. Create a safe space for open dialogue, encouraging empathy and active listening. If issues arise, have compassionate, private conversations to understand how the team can provide support. Emphasize accountability and reinforce team values, while also offering resources like counseling if needed. Finally, monitor the team’s dynamics and adjust your approach based on ongoing feedback, ensuring a collaborative and supportive environment.

To address an individual’s personal issues impacting team dynamics, approach the situation empathetically yet professionally. Schedule a private conversation, allowing them to share their concerns without judgment. Offer support within boundaries, such as adjusting workloads or suggesting resources. Encourage open communication within the team, fostering a collaborative environment where colleagues can express and support each other while maintaining productivity.

Here’s a step-by-step strategy: 1. Observe and Gather Information: Start by observing how the personal issues are impacting the team. 2. Approach with Empathy: A one-on-one conversation with the individual & approach them with empathy and a non-judgmental attitude. 3. Clarify Team Impact: If the person acknowledges their issues, discuss how their current situation is affecting the team. 4. Offer Support and Resources: Depending on the individual’s needs, offer support. 5. Establish Boundaries: If the individual’s personal issues continue to disrupt the team, you may need to set clear boundaries. 6. Foster Team Resilience: Encourage open communication within the team and foster a supportive environment.

The key over here is empathy, politeness and trust to bring back the positivity within the workplace environment. My approach to address such an issue would be: 1. Having a 1:1 chat with the individual and making sure that 'empathy' exists throughout. I would carefully listen to their concerns and offer unconditional support. 2. Offer a few days leave if this can improve the situation. 3. Have a cup of coffee with the individual to make them feel better and enhance trust - remember, informal conversation and relationship building plays a key role at work. 4. Help the individual understand the importance of maintaining professional boundaries. 5. Lead by example and provide a supportive environment.
