I don't. Having set up the coaching space by letting them know I'm a sounding board and that there is nothing they will say that I will judge, or that will shock me, and that my role is to hold space, I give them space to explore that emotional charge, and let the wave of emotion crescendo and then subside. From there, we pick up the pieces together and build with them.

When working with an emotionally charged client, I first create a safe space by acknowledging and validating their feelings. Once they feel truly heard, I gently guide the conversation back toward their goals, using open-ended questions to redirect their focus. If needed, I pause and suggest grounding exercises, like deep breathing, to help them regain composure. Keeping the session solution-oriented while showing compassion ensures progress without dismissing their emotions.

When a client comes into a session emotionally charged, you can 1. Let them express their emotions 2. Note what's bothering them, as that will reveal information to you. 3. Once they have had the chance to express themselves and you have validated their feelings, you can gently direct them towards what they want to address in the session. 4. You can also use grounding techniques such as deep breathing to help the client stay in the present. When clients are emotionally charged, they are unable to focus. As life coaches, our job is to be a partner and help them refocus on the goals they want to achieve.
