When communication issues derail a project, the key to keeping your team motivated lies in addressing the root cause while fostering a collaborative and positive environment. Start by promoting open dialogue—encourage team members to voice concerns, clarify misunderstandings, and share ideas freely. Active listening and regular check-ins can help bridge gaps and build trust. Next, establish clear expectations by defining roles, responsibilities, and deliverables so everyone knows their part in the bigger picture. Ambiguity often fuels frustration, so clarity is a powerful motivator. Finally, celebrate small wins along the way. Acknowledging even minor achievements keeps morale high and reminds the team of the progress being made.
-
Clarify goals and roles. Revisit and align the team on project objectives. Celebrate small wins, acknowledge individual contributions, and make appreciation a part of team culture. Encourage ongoing feedback using a 360-degree approach where everyone shares insights about progress, performance, and processes.

Recalibrate. Reset. Recharge. When communication threatens to derail a project, addressing the root cause(s) is a must. Be bold and nimble enough to shift and pivot, if needed. Once addressed, it is essential to reset expectations, remind the group of the “why.” I am a healthcare leader, so the “why” generally centers around our patients, our team, and/or our community, so recentering the group around the mission is important. Likewise, re-energizing and recharging the team is vital…communication issues risk engagement, so ensuring we motivate momentum with the goal of ensuring we cross the finish line!

Lead by example, demonstrating effective communication and empathy. Provide training on communication skills and celebrate milestones to reinforce a sense of achievement. By promoting transparency and support, you can resolve challenges and inspire the team to stay focused and motivated.
