Prospective Evaluation of the Prevalence and Laboratory Findings in Adult Cats with Low Thyroxine and Increased Thyrotropin Concentration

Adult-onset spontaneous feline hypothyroidism (SH) is considered rare, but its prevalence is unknown. This study aimed to screen laboratory submissions for cats with laboratory suspected SH (LSSH) and to identify laboratory abnormalities associated with LSSH. Submissions to a commercial laboratory in Germany between January 2022 and April 2023 were prospectively screened for cats aged 3–12 years with low total thyroxine (TT4); in these cats, thyrotropin (TSH) was measured. Iatrogenic hypothyroidism was excluded by contacting submitting veterinarians. Creatinine, triglyceride and cholesterol concentration and red blood cell count (RBC) of cats with LSSH (low TT4, TSH > 0.53 ng/mL; i.e., [one sided TSH reference change value (76%) of TSH upper reference interval (RI)] + [TSH upper RI] = 0.53) were compared to euthyroid cats (TT4 within RI) and cats with suspected non-thyroidal illness (SNTIS) (low TT4, normal TSH (<0.3 ng/mL; upper RI)) by non-parametric tests. p < 0.05 was significant. In total, 31,572 submissions of cats were included, 25,169 (79.7%) were euthyroid, 3818 (12.1%) had SNTIS and 61 (0.2%) had LSSH. Cats with LSSH had higher creatinine (p = 0.002) and lower RBC count (p < 0.0001) than euthyroid cats as well as higher creatinine (p = 0.00035) than cats with SNTIS. Azotaemia (creatinine > 140 µmol/L) and anaemia (RBC < 7.2 × 1012/L) were present in 28/49 (57%) and 19/44 (43%) cats with LSSH, respectively. There was no difference between LSSH and SNTIS for the remaining parameters. In cats with low TT4, azotaemia and anaemia might indicate the presence of SH and reinforce the need for TSH testing. Hypercholesterolaemia and hypertriglyceridaemia are not indicators of SH. Full article

Linguatula serrata, commonly known as the dogs’ ‘tongue-worm’, is an arthropod endoparasite of the class Pentastomida infesting chiefly canids as definitive hosts and herbivores as intermediate hosts. Adult L. serrata usually reside in the upper respiratory tract, such as the nasal cavity and sinuses, and the larval stages are encapsulated in various visceral organs, respectively. This report presents the first case of a L. serrata nymphal pulmonary infestation in a cat from Albania and adds to the description of the overall rare cases of this parasitic infestation in domestic cats. Discussion of this case together with a comprehensive review of the literature allows us to conclude that cats are susceptible to the infestation with L. serrata when ingesting the parasite’s eggs and allow for the development of the nymphal stage of the parasite in several visceral organs. Therefore, cats may serve as accidental intermediate hosts in the life cycle of L. serrata but are unlikely to be of epidemiological relevance. There is no evidence that domestic cats can act as definitive hosts of L. serrata. Full article

Microcystin-leucine arginine (MC-LR) poses a serious threat to aquatic animals during cyanobacterial blooms. Recently, biochar (BC), derived from rice straw, has emerged as a potent adsorbent for eliminating hazardous contaminants from water. To assess the joint hepatotoxic effects of environmentally relevant concentrations of MC-LR and BC on fish, male adult zebrafish (Danio rerio) were sub-chronically co-exposed to varying concentrations of MC-LR (0, 1, 5, and 25 μg/L) and BC (0 and 100 μg/L) in a fully factorial experiment. After 30 days exposure, our findings suggested that the existence of BC significantly decreased MC-LR bioavailability in liver. Furthermore, histopathological analysis revealed that BC mitigated MC-LR-induced hepatic lesions, which were characterized by mild damage, such as vacuolization, pyknotic nuclei, and swollen mitochondria. Compared to the groups exposed solely to MC-LR, decreased malondialdehyde (MDA) and increased catalase (CAT) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) were noticed in the mixture groups. Concurrently, significant changes in the mRNA expression levels of Nrf2 pathway genes (cat, sod1, gstr, keap1a, nrf2a, and gclc) further proved that BC reduces the oxidative damage induced by MC-LR. These findings demonstrate that BC decreases MC-LR bioavailability in the liver, thereby alleviating MC-LR-induced hepatotoxicity through the Nrf2 signaling pathway in zebrafish. Our results also imply that BC could serve as a potentially environmentally friendly material for mitigating the detrimental effects of MC-LR on fish. Full article

The aim of this preliminary study was to morphologically and dimensionally characterize the cat’s olfactory bulb in the sagittal plane and to establish potential relationships with the cranial conformation, based on the study of in vivo MRI images. Midsagittal and transverse T2-weighted images of the head of 40 cats subjected to MRI were selected. For each animal, the skull index was calculated to classify the cranial conformation. Then, for the olfactory bulb, the angle was calculated, the orientation was determined, and the sagittal section area was measured. It was established that animals classified as brachycephalic have more compact olfactory bulbs, with smaller cross-sectional areas, ventral orientation and smaller angles established with the line that goes from the hard palate and the intercondylar notch of the foramen magnum. Animals classified as dolichocephalic have more globose and wider olfactory bulbs, dorsal orientation, and larger angles. Mesocephalic animals present an intermediate position. Males and younger adult animals have olfactory bulbs with larger cross-sectional areas than females and older animals. This work allows for the preliminarily characterization of the olfactory bulb in cats in the sagittal plane, and the correlations identified with other head structures open doors for the use of the bulb as an early indicator for the establishment of alterations of varied etiology. The health of adult dogs and cats is affected positively or negatively by their development in utero and throughout postnatal growth. Preventive veterinary care is particularly important when animals are physiologically immature and sensitive to modifiable environmental factors. Veterinary nurses/technicians are often at the forefront of promoting healthy development, reinforcing the work of veterinarians and using their knowledge, experience, and passion to lead initiatives with breeders and pet guardians. This opinion article considers the role of qualified veterinary nurses/technicians in the care of puppies and kittens throughout their developmental life stages—gestation, the suckling period, growth post-weaning to puberty or neutering, and late growth to adulthood. Much of their influence is through the education of pet carers; they provide trustworthy information relevant to the individual pet and focused on the practicalities of best husbandry practices. These include practical advice on recognizing dystocia, neonatal care, weaning, introduction to the new home, the prevention and management of infectious diseases, socialization with conspecifics and humans, habituation to potential environmental stresses, nutrition, oral hygiene, and grooming. The veterinary nurse’s goal is not only to see young pets develop into healthy, well-adjusted adults but also to see pet guardians developing sustainable human–animal bonds. Full article

Isoflavones are composed of phytoestrogens (genistein and daidzein), which can be metabolized by cats. These compounds can promote the maintenance of lean body mass and control food intake. These effects are desirable in neutered animals, as they are predisposed to obesity. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of dietary supplementation of 1.0% isoflavone on the metabolizable energy intake, serum concentrations of satiety-related hormones and peptides, and body composition of neutered cats. Sixteen neutered adult cats were blocked by gender and divided into two groups (n = 8): the control group (CG) received a commercial diet, while the isoflavone group (IG) received the same diet supplemented by 1% of isoflavone for 99 days. Computed tomography was performed on the first and last experimental days to assess the animals’ body composition. Satiety challenges were conducted on days 19 and 44. In the last day of the study, blood samples were collected to determine the concentration of insulin, ghrelin, leptin, peptide YY, and GLP-1. A statistical analysis was conducted using R software 3.5.2, considering both the interaction and individual effects of group and time (p < 0.05). The average intake of genistein in the IG was 0.75 ± 0.10 mg/kg body weight, and daidzein intake was 51.73 ± 7.05 mg/kg. No significant individual or interaction effects were observed for any of the analyzed variables. Therefore, the inclusion of 1.0% isoflavone in the diet did not affect the energy requirements, satiety responses, or body composition of neutered adult cats. Full article

This study tested the ISL against renal damage induced by a high-fat diet (HFD) and explored its underlying mechanisms. Adult male rats were assigned to four groups: (1) control on a standard diet (STD), (2) ISL on STD (30 mg/kg), (3) HFD, and (4) HFD + ISL (30 mg/kg). After 12 weeks of dietary intervention, ISL treatment led to significant reductions in body weight gain, visceral fat, and glucose and insulin levels in HFD-fed rats. Notably, ISL decreased serum urea and creatinine, increased serum albumin, and improved urinary profiles by lowering the urinary albumin and the albumin/creatinine ratio. Histological analyses revealed that ISL enhanced the glomerular structure and mitigated tubular damage, as evidenced by reduced urinary excretion of the kidney injury markers NGAL and KIM-1. Additionally, ISL significantly lowered cholesterol, triglycerides, and free fatty acids in both the control and HFD groups while also decreasing oxidized low-density lipoproteins (ox-LDLs) and malondialdehyde (MDA). Importantly, ISL enhanced renal antioxidant levels, increasing glutathione (GSH), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and catalase (CAT). Moreover, ISL downregulated mRNA levels of MD-2, Toll-like receptor-4 (TLR-4), and NF-κB, leading to reduced NF-κB p65 levels in renal tissues. In conclusion, ISL offers substantial protection against HFD-induced renal toxicity through mechanisms that attenuate metabolic stress, enhance antioxidant defenses, and inhibit the MD-2/TLR4/NF-κB inflammatory pathway. Background: Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a treatment modality that uses light to activate a photosensitizing agent, destroying target cells. The growing awareness of the necessity to reduce or eliminate the use of mammals in research has prompted the search for safer toxicity testing models aligned with the new global guidelines and compliant with the relevant regulations. Objective: The objective of this study was to assess the impact of PDT on alternative models to mammals, including in vitro three-dimensional (3D) cultures and in vivo, in invertebrate animals, utilizing a potent photosensitizer, 2-hydroxychalcone. Methods: Cytotoxicity was assessed in two cellular models: monolayer (2D) and 3D. For this purpose, spheroids of two cell lines, primary dermal fibroblasts (HDFa) and adult human epidermal cell keratinocytes (HaCat), were developed and characterized following criteria on cell viability, shape, diameter, and number of cells. The survival percentages of Caenorhabditis elegans and Galleria mellonella were evaluated at 1 and 7 days, respectively. Results: The findings indicated that all the assessed platforms are appropriate for investigating PDT toxicity. Furthermore, 2-hydroxychalcone demonstrated low toxicity in the absence of light and when mediated by PDT across a range of in vitro (2D and 3D cultures) and in vivo (invertebrate animal models, including G. mellonella and C. elegans) models. Conclusion: There was a strong correlation between the in vitro and in vivo tests, with similar toxicity results, particularly in the 3D models and C. elegans, where the concentration for 50% viability was approximately 100 µg/mL. Understanding the relationship between the built environment and metro ridership has become essential for advancing sustainable transportation development. Limited research has been given to how built environment factors influence metro ridership at a station-to-station level. Moreover, most studies focus on the general population, overlooking the special groups. This study examines the influence of the built environment on metro origin–destination (OD) ridership for older adults. Specially, we employ the CatBoost model, along with SHAP interpretation, to assess feature importance and capture nonlinear effects. Taking Xi’an as a case study, the results show that: (1) The CatBoost model demonstrates superior fitting and predictive performance, outperforming both the XGBoost and Logistic Regression models. (2) There are distinct variations in the influence of built environment factors at origin and destination stations. Traffic-related variables have a stronger effect at origin stations, while land-use variables exert a more significant influence at destination stations. (3) The built environment’s impact on older adults’ metro ridership exhibits a clear nonlinear relationship. Notably, an optimal land-use mix of 1.8–1.9 and a job density of 5000–7000 significantly enhance ridership. These findings provide valuable insights into how the built environment shapes older adults’ metro travel, contributing to the sustainable urban development. Full article

Polyphenols have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties and maintain the immune system in balance; therefore, the aim of the study was to investigate the effect of polyphenols present in pomegranate peel extract on the spleens of rats with metabolic syndrome. The study objects were adult male Zucker Diabetic Fatty (ZDF-Leprfa/Crl, fa/fa) rats. The rats were divided into a control group (MetS) consisting of rats with metabolic syndrome and four study groups consisting of rats with metabolic syndrome (MetS + 100 mg and MetS + 200 mg) or healthy animals (H + 100 mg and H + 200 mg) receiving polyphenol extract at a dose of 100 mg or 200 mg/kg, respectively. Concentrations of IL-6, NF-κB, NFATc1, Cyt-C, TNFα, MMP-2, ROS/RNS, and MDA were measured; the activities of GPX, SOD, CAT, MMP-2, and MMP-9 were assessed; and the expression of the BAX and BCL-2 genes was evaluated in homogenized spleens. In conclusion, pomegranate extract may lead to an increase in catalase and glutathione peroxidase activity. Additionally, it may have a reducing effect on the ROS/RNS level, leading to a reduction in the activity of SOD in the MetS groups with PPE administration. Moreover, the BCL-2 gene showed lower expression in the MetS + 100 mg group compared to the H + 100 mg group, indicating that the balance between pro- and antiapoptotic factors of the BCL-2 family may be disrupted by the metabolic syndrome promoting the proapoptotic pathway. Background/Objectives: The dietary fat concentration and fatty acid profile can influence various aspects of the feline organism. This study examined their effects on the urine composition, apparent nutrient digestibility, and selected blood variables. Methods: Ten healthy adult cats (46.6 ± 14.1 months old, initial body weight 4.99 ± 0.91 kg) received a low-fat basic diet with or without the addition of sunflower oil, fish oil, or lard in a randomized crossover design. The oil and lard were added to the daily amount of food at 0.5 or 1 g/kg body weight of the cats. At the end of each 3-week feeding period, urine, feces, and fasting blood samples were collected. Results: The results demonstrated only small effects of the dietary fat concentration and source on the urine composition of the cats. In addition, the apparent nutrient digestibility was unaffected by the dietary treatments. The supplementation with fish oil, but not sunflower oil or lard, lowered the triglycerides and increased the total and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol concentrations in the plasma of the cats (p < 0.05). However, these blood values were within the physiological reference ranges among all groups. Conclusions: It can be concluded that the dietary fat content and fatty acid profile did not adversely affect the urine composition or nutrient digestibility in healthy adult cats. The lipid metabolism of the animals was modulated by the supplementation with fish oil, a relevant source of n-3 fatty acids. The observed triglyceride-lowering effect should be further investigated in clinical studies. Full article

In this study, coefficients enabling estimation of shoulder height were obtained by taking morphometric measurements from radiographic images of live cats using the radiogrammetric method. For this purpose, a total of 37 adult cats, including 17 females and 20 males, were involved. While the effect of sexual dimorphism was observed on the morphometric data, the presence of sexual dimorphism was only evident in the coefficients (factors) of the humerus and talus. No significant effect of gender was found on the shoulder height estimation coefficients (factors) for other thoracic and pelvic limb bones. Gender had an impact on the slenderness index in all thoracic limbs, but only on the tibia slenderness index among the pelvic limb bones. Generally, female individuals were found to have more slender limbs. It is believed that the obtained coefficients (factors) and index data will contribute significantly to the prediction of archaeological cat morphology. Full article

Pyometra is a major reproductive disorder affecting female cats. Characterized by the accumulation of purulent exudate in the uterus, it can lead to severe and potentially fatal complications. This pathology primarily occurs in adult cats during diestrus, but can also affect younger felines, often due to inappropriate administration of hormonal medications. While the etiopathogenesis of pyometra is better understood in bitches, few studies have addressed the molecular factors involved in feline pyometra. Therefore, this review aims to provide an up-to-date and comprehensive discussion of pyometra in cats, focusing on the regulation of molecular factors described in this species, including hormonal, redox, immunological, and growth factors. Understanding the regulation of these factors in pyometra is crucial for elucidating its pathogenesis in domestic cats and for improving diagnosis and identifying novel therapeutic approaches. This study aimed to assess thoracic radiographic abnormalities in cats infected with immature stages of Dirofilaria immitis to evaluate the utility of this diagnostic technique during early infection. A total of 123 cats from a hyperendemic area were classified into three groups: asymptomatic cats seronegative to anti-D.-immitis antibodies (Group A), seropositive asymptomatic cats (Group B), and seropositive cats with clinical signs that were at high risk of heartworm-associated respiratory disease (HARD) (Group C). Radiographic measurements and lung parenchymal abnormalities were analyzed and compared across the groups. Significant differences in several parameters, including CrPA/R4, and CdPA/R9 ratios, were observed between healthy and seropositive cats, suggesting early arterial damage even in the absence of adult worms. Other parameters that showed differences between healthy and infected cats were CVC/Ao and CVC/R4 ratios, but not the VHS. Group C exhibited a marked bronchointerstitial pattern, indicating severe parenchymal alterations associated with clinical signs. The study demonstrated that thoracic radiography can detect early vascular and parenchymal changes in feline D. immitis infections, providing valuable information for diagnosing HARD. However, it also highlights the limitations of radiographic techniques, as some seropositive cats displayed no significant abnormalities. The findings underscore the importance of combining radiography with clinical and serological assessments for a more accurate diagnosis of feline heartworm disease. Full article

The Physiological Effect of Trichoderma viride on Melon Yield and Its Ability to Suppress Rhizoctonia solani

Melon damping off, which has a negative impact on melon quality and yield, can be safely and effectively managed with Trichoderma. Melon cultivar ‘Longtian No. 1’ was evaluated at both the adult and seedling stages in a pot experiment. The Rs and PD liquids were utilized as CK1 and CK2, respectively. Trichoderma viride Tv286 treatments T1B, T2B, T3B, and T4B were used based on Rs at concentrations of 104, 105, 106, and 107 CFU·g−1, respectively. The impact of several treatments on the antioxidant system and seedling quality of melon were assessed at 15, 25, and 35 days after sowing. We examined the effects of several treatments on melon quality, yield attributes, and physiological and biochemical markers during the adult stage at 10, 20, and 30 days after pollination. The effects of several treatments on melon damping off were also studied. Applying T. viride Tv286 at different rates effectively increased the activities of enzymes, including catalase (CAT), peroxidase (POD), superoxide dismutase (SOD), ascorbate peroxidase (APX), and polyphenol oxidase (PPO), in the leaves of melon seedlings, significantly reduced the malondialdehyde (MDA) content, and improved the root–shoot ratio and seedling strength index. In terms of its influence on promoting the effect of antioxidant system indicators, T3B performed well. Melon seedlings treated with T3B showed higher CAT, POD, SOD, APX, and PPO activities in their leaves 35 days after sowing compared to CK1 (189.74, 169.61, 175.36, 224.20, and 477.39%, respectively). The strong seedling index and root–shoot ratio showed improvements of 130.43 and 79.71%, respectively, and the MDA content dropped by 35.66% at 35 days after sowing compared to CK1. Varying the rates at which T. viride Tv286 was applied increased the nitrate reductase (NR) activity and nitrate nitrogen, proline (Pro), chlorophyll, soluble sugar, and soluble protein contents in mature melon leaves, increasing melon quality and yield. T3B is the most effective marketing campaign. Compared to CK1, mature T3B leaves had higher NR activity, nitrate nitrogen content, chlorophyll content, soluble sugar content, soluble protein content, and Pro content 30 days after melon pollination (100.40, 135.17, 68.59, 93.65, 158.13, and 238.67%, respectively). The soluble solids, soluble protein, soluble sugar, vitamin C contents, and yield of melon fruit increased by 50.07, 126.82, 60.62, 70.79, and 61.45%, respectively, at 30 days after melon pollination compared to CK1. Optimal management of melon damping off can be accomplished with the application of T. viride Tv286 at different concentrations, with T3B exhibiting the best effect. The control effects reached 90.48 and 72.99% at the seedling and adult stages, respectively. Overall, T. viride Tv286 improved seedling quality, damping off control efficacy, melon yield and quality, and the antioxidant system during the seedling stage and enhanced physiological and biochemical characteristics during the adult stage. This study indicates the potential of T. viride Tv286 conidia as a biological control agent because it can prevent plant disease, increase yield, and improve quality. Full article
