This post is for fundraisers who wish to grow. There is no fundraising apocalypse. But big, negative, sensationalist headlines get more attention on LinkedIn, so there you have it. We deal in solutions and fundraising growth, so why have I chosen to name the fundraising apocalypse in this headline? Because if all you see is the constant stream of fear filled headlines in this feed, you would believe the apocalypse is approaching. For some, fear and then the paralysis will creep in. Worse, worse, worse – if the only communications your CEO, SLT and board see are apocalyptic headlines about fundraising then you will lose internal support, investment and decision-making capacity. When an organisation’s leadership stops believing in fundraising growth, income will drop and the fundraising apocalypse will become a self-fulfilling prophecy. But here’s a fact: many organisations are still growing their fundraising. Worldwide. In all markets. They are not ‘bucking the trend.’ Their leadership still believes in fundraising growth and the three key decisions that drive it. They are still action-focused and unafraid. Their growth rates are the same as they were pre-COVID and remote working. It is those organisations we have worked with and researched in forensic detail. We have identified the key behaviours that make them different and guarantee success. These behaviours are the same, independent of country, culture, cause or size. Growth starts with unequivocal belief in fundraising. Belief comes from knowing exactly what to do: where to start and how to keep going. It starts with the leadership, not just of fundraising but of the whole organisation . The emotional journeys from officer to manager to leader, and from stress to wellbeing are not exactly the same, but they are similar. What they have in common is the same inflection point, the internal psychological shift that changes everything. We have sufficient data from both leadership and wellbeing studies to be absolutely sure of this. The journey can be summarised thus: From blame to responsibility to solutions to action. In a world of relentless digital media, it is easy to shift into ‘blame’ mode, because we are surrounded by other people doing it, often ‘LOUDLY.’  In fundraising terms, there are many things our organisations can blame – the economy, the governments, the ignorance of people, colleagues, leadership, budgets and, (dare I say it?) the brand. Oh yes, and … etc. At Revolutionise International, we help with the solution and action parts of the journey. A big thank you to Scott Chapman AM who joined the Great Fundraising Masterclass this week to share his experience of leading the Royal Flying Doctor Service (Victoria) for the last 14 years.
