Here's a research project that looks at the climate challenge from a slightly different angle: it aims to extract CO2 directly from oceans, rather than the atmosphere. As our oceans absorb about a quarter of the world's CO2 emissions, the collaboration between VTT and Mitsubishi Electric is seeking to develop direct ocean capture (DOC) technology towards commercial viability. I caught up with Antti Arasto, who leads the collaboration for VTT, who sees a 'big potential' for the technology. He explained how the project will endeavour to keep costs down and ensure scalability. 'It’s not only about the technology, but also about how you put that as part of bigger value chain, how you eventually make it into business,' he said.
