🎙️In this third episode of our First Movers podcast series, Jordan Pechie of Seaspan ULC takes us for a deep dive into the practical realities faced by companies that pioneer new fuels and technologies in shipping.🎙️ It’s now been about a year and a half since the company welcomed the first of three fully electric tugboats into its fleet, operated in British Columbia, Canada. Seaspan’s experience provides a unique window into how day-to-day work was transformed, as captains adapted to operating the (very quiet!) vessels without the usual cues provided by the engines’ sound and vibration. Jordan’s testimony also reveals important lessons for the rest of the industry. Crews were involved throughout, with captains feeding into the vessel design from the outset. And although the project didn’t receive a single dollar of government funding, it was made possible because of the shared vision of the project partners and clients – and because it made technical and financial sense. This is one of Jordan’s main messages: the importance for first movers to develop their green projects around their own operational needs and constraints, and to anchor their decisions in real world data.
