December is a time for reflection and as we look back on the past year, it's clear that 2024 has been a significant one for R;pple. NHS staff are our everyday heroes, yet many are struggling with their own mental health. This year, a survey by Unison revealed that nearly one in three NHS staff members has taken time off due to mental health challenges. Burnout, stress and the overwhelming pressure of the staffing crisis have left many feeling exhausted and unsupported. This holiday season, join R;pple in showing our appreciation for NHS staff. The newly published Online Safety Act (OSA) Illegal Harms Codes of Practice mark a step toward holding online platforms accountable for harmful content. But campaigners, including Molly Rose Foundation, argue these measures fail to go far enough to protect vulnerable young people. While the codes address illegal harms such as terrorism and fraud, protections for content promoting suicide and self-harm are not expected until April 2025—a delay that leaves countless individuals at risk. Our CTO, David Savage, shared his concerns: "The provisions of this new legislation do not go into enough detail around the topic of suicide and self-harm which can closely be tied to online bullying, body dysmorphia, addiction, abuse and more. We do hope this regulation will do some good but it does entirely miss internet service providers and we fear it is another missed opportunity for real reform in online safety for the UK." Winter blues affect 1 in 4 people but following these simple steps can bring light to the darkness. 🌌 1. Follow the sun - Try to get outside during daylight hours, even if it's cloudy. A short walk or just sitting by a window can help. 🌞 2. Bright home lighting - Use bright, warm lights in your home to create a cozy and relaxing atmosphere. 3. Maintain a sleep schedule - With fewer daylight hours, it's easy to fall into irregular sleep patterns. Sticking to a consistent bedtime and wake-up time is essential. 😴 4. Exercise regularly: Physical activity boosts your mood and energy levels. Indoor workouts like yoga, pilates or dancing will help you keep you moving even on the coldest days. 5. Eat mood-boosting foods: Include foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids (such as salmon and walnuts), complex carbohydrates and vitamin D.
