With biodiversity facing unprecedented challenges, Amy Hinsley has contributed to a new study on using AI for conservation. The study, led by the University of Cambridge, identifies key areas AI could be used to transform existing conservation practices and reverse biodiversity loss. These include: ✅ Monitoring marine life with distributed acoustic sensing ✅ Unveiling 'dark diversity' ✅ Cracking down on illegal wildlife trade Amy’s expertise bridges both conservation and AI, with her current work focusing on using AI to improve the availability and quality of data about the illegal wildlife trade, using an approach called nowcasting. The Oxford Martin AI Governance Initiative recently convened a group of experts to explore how the forthcoming UK frontier AI bill can be best shaped to achieve the UK government’s goals of effective regulation while remaining narrow and pro-innovation. Today, we launch our latest open source graphic: the ‘Net Zero Conveyor Belt': LINK: https://lnkd.in/e2WzMqNf Based on a paper first published in 2021 by Prof. Thomas Hale of Blavatnik School of Government, University of Oxford, the model illustrates how voluntary efforts by non-State entities - such as cities, businesses, investors, NGOs, UN initiatives, and civil society, can create the foundation for standards, ultimately leading to impactful regulations. E.g. The Conveyor Belt... 🌍 highlights how non-State actions can propel rapid and credible climate action, as well as shift the bounds of political feasibility. 👩⚖️ maps the current regulatory landscape across the #G20 to emphasize how regulations are proliferating across a variety of domains and regions. 🛠️ is more than a visual aid—it’s a tool to guide and inspire ‘all hands on deck’ to tackle the climate crisis. The four cogs of the Conveyor Belt - voluntary initiatives, orchestration initiatives, standards and regulations, are together greater than the sum of their parts. But the connections between those cogs are not automatic - they have to be developed, ‘greased’ and regularly maintained. We're hiring a Senior Research Associate on AI Threat Detection to work as part of a project team of researchers from the Department of Computer Science, University of Oxford and the University of Oxford, Department of Engineering Science. The Oxford Martin Programme on AI Threat Detection aims to fill a critical gap in AI security by developing advanced methods to detect attacks on AI systems. The successful candidate will work primarily under the direction of Professor Sadie Creese and the supervision of Professor Michael Goldsmith. Applicants should have doctoral degree and post-qualification research experience in a cybersecurity-relevant field (e.g. computer science, international relations, economics, political science, social or physical sciences, philosophy, cognitive or social psychology, law, anthropology, development or sociology). We are a Stonewall Top 100 and Living Wage Employer, and we hold an Athena Swan Bronze Award for our work towards gender equality, a Race Equality Charter Bronze Award, and an HR Excellence in Research Award.
