#12DaysOfResearch | Day 2️⃣: A commonly used psoriasis drug has been found to be effective in helping to treat children and adolescents with early-stage type-1 #diabetes 🧒🏽 Researchers have shown that the drug Ustekinumab, which can be injected by psoriasis patients at home, preserves bodily production of insulin in people with type-1 diabetes. The discovery helps bring the goal of managing type-1 diabetes without insulin closer. The study was funded by an NIHR and Medical Research Council partnership, led by Cardiff University / Prifysgol Caerdydd and involved researchers from King's College London, Swansea University and University of Calgary. #12DaysOfResearch | Day 1️⃣: A new digital app that improves speech for people after brain damage has been developed with support from the NIHR. 📱 The iTalkBetter app analyses the speech of users with the language disorder aphasia, which is caused by a brain injury or stroke. It then provides users with feedback, enabling them to practise words in their own time and without limits. The app was found to improve users’ ability to name 200 commonly used items and also their spontaneous speech. Read more: https://lnkd.in/eka8v4-D Wellcome Trust UCL

As we approach the end of the year, our Journals Library Editor in Chief, Dr Cat Chatfield, reflects on 2024: "As Editor in Chief of the NIHR Journals Library, I am lucky enough to have a front row seat to our transformation into a publishing offer that meets the needs of NIHR, researchers, patients and the public, with inclusion at its heart. "2024 has seen increasing numbers of awards publishing through our threaded publication model, including research on getting kids more active and how computerised decision making affects outcomes. These publications are now more discoverable than ever through our refreshed website. We've been working with our researcher community to understand the benefits and challenges of the model, to inform further improvements next year. "And, most importantly, we've expanded our editorial team to better represent our diverse community, alongside working closely with NIHR Research Inclusion colleagues to create our new Inclusive Language guide: https://lnkd.in/e3BgVgB7 "I'm excited to look forward to 2025, to explore how we can continue to evolve. Collaborating with patient partners to make our Plain Language Summaries better and more accessible will make NIHR funded findings available to everyone who needs them, as well as sharing work from a broader range of NIHR funded authors and programmes."

As the NHS enters another busy winter we look at how a prediction model developed with NIHR funding can help healthcare services prevent falls among older people and reduce pressure on the NHS. The eFalls calculator uses existing NHS electronic patient record data to automatically identify people at risk of hospitalisation or A&E attendance after a fall over the next 12 months. This means: 🚑People can be proactively referred to specialist falls prevention services for assessments 🚑And be provided with interventions to prevent falls taking place. The researchers are now piloting eFalls with a healthcare partnership and hope it can be adopted across the NHS. The study was funded by NIHR's Health Technology Assessment (HTA) Programme.
