🔬 A Breakthrough in Blood Quality Testing Scientists have developed a new way to assess how well red blood cells deliver oxygen - by measuring their shape. This innovation, called FlowScore, could improve specialist transplant and transfusion practice as well as blood banking. Blood banks can now use FlowScore as a quality-control measure during processing and storage, and it could also provide a way to check the quality of blood for specific vulnerable patient groups. Delighted to have a visit from Karen Bonner MBE to our #Brixton centre - thanks for making your 76th donation with us! 🩸
Regional Chief Nurse London NHS England London Region Fellow Queen’s Nursing Institute & Burdett Hero.
#Day3 my 1st visit as the new Chief Nurse for London NHS England was to the brand new NHSBT Cellular & Molecular Therapies in #Brixton also #Day3 I had the pleasure of spending time with Denise Mairéad Thiruchelvam Chief Nurse & the team. Thank you to Williams who helped me give my 76th blood 🩸donation 💙. As a black person with 0+ blood with RO subtype I know how rare this blood subtype is. RO is more common in people of Black heritage: Prevalence & found in only 2–4% of blood donors, but is up to 55% prevalent in people of Black heritage. This an inspired move to have a centre right in the heart of one of the oldest & most diverse communities in London. I hope this will increase donations from the black community. But anyone eligible can give. So #AreYouTheGivingType?

Remember the Waiting to Live campaign? This powerful campaign shone a spotlight on children waiting for lifesaving transplants. Handmade dolls appeared across the UK, each representing a waiting child. The campaign was inspired by Ralph, who desperately needed a multi-organ transplant. Today, we're pleased to share that more than half of the children featured in the campaign, including Ralph, have received their lifesaving transplants. ❤️ Ralph's mum Katie said: "Waiting was like living in a nightmare. Our biggest fear was that the cancer would spread and he'd no longer be eligible for transplant. We really were running out of time, we were living in hope of another family saying yes to organ donation. "Earlier this year, Ralph received his incredible gift of life, he likely wouldn't be here without it. Because of his incredible donor family, he's enjoying being a big brother to Albie, days out to the seaside and forest walks. "Transplant life hasn't been easy for Ralph and he has had many serious complications for which he is still continuing to fight. But when he is out of hospital he is happy and running around and like any other 4 year old. "He is so excited to have written his list for Santa and is looking forward to the big day. Last year we didn't know if it would be our last Christmas together and now thanks to our incredible donor family we have hope for a future for Ralph." The award-winning campaign by VML highlighted the hundreds of children waiting for transplants and the need for parents to consider organ donation for themselves and their children. #WaitingToLive #OrganDonation #CampaignUpdate #NHS #SaveLives

We were delighted to host MP for Liverpool Garston, and Minister of State for Defence Maria Eagle, along to our labs in Speke, Liverpool. Whilst there, she was shown around the site, including our state of the art tissue labs, and met staff including Head of Centre, Michelle Weston, Specialist Nurses Jane and Emma, Assistant Director for Tissues and Eyes Kyle Bennett and Director of Organ and Tissue Development Anthony Clarkson. At Speke, we co-ordinate, retrieve, process, bank and supply human tissue for surgical use across the UK.

📢 Great to welcome Dr Ben Spencer, MP for Runnymede and Weybridge, and Alister Jenkins, who works with Societi Foundation, to our Twickenham Donor Centre today! 💉 Both rolled up their sleeves to donate plasma and met our dedicated staff, showing just how simple it is to help save lives. Our team were on hand to explain the donation process and how plasma can be made into medicines to treat people with immune deficiencies, rare disorders, and critical conditions. The visit was part of our ongoing effort to encourage more people to try plasma donation at our Twickenham centre, one of 3 places to donate plasma across England. If you live or work locally, our team would love to welcome you as well! #GivePlasma #GivingType #SaveLives #NHS #Twickenham

Honouring extraordinary generosity at our Donor Recognition Ceremony in Kent ❤️ This week we honoured blood donors who reached the incredible milestone of 100 donations. We also recognised plasma donors who achieved the 250 donation milestone, plus a remarkable donor who donated plasma 500 times. We also heard from inspirational guest speakers and donor recipients who underscored the impact donations have had on their lives, and those around them. From the 135 donors in attendance, over 13,300 units of whole blood and 2,500 platelets were collected. This is equivalent to 47,400 patients! To put things into more perspective, that amount could fill the Royal Albert Hall 9 times. Or fill the largest sports venue in Kent, Gillingham FC’s Gallagher Stadium, 4 and a half times over. Their extraordinary generosity is a shining example of compassion in action. We also extend our heartfelt gratitude to everyone across the NHS who makes this work possible. Let’s continue to celebrate the power of giving and inspire others to join this meaningful cause. If you’re considering becoming a donor, now is the perfect time to start.
