  • Santa spotted near our Cheapside branch! No, it’s not early Christmas deliveries, it’s our very own Customer Representative, Alfie. Running in London’s annual Santa in the City race with hundreds of other Santas, Alfie braved a night of typical British weather to raise money for our Nationwide Fairer Futures partner, Centrepoint. Well done Alfie, you sleighed it 😉 And a huge shout-out to customers and colleagues across the country who have been raising money for all of our Nationwide Fairer Futures partners.

  • While our competitors continue to close their branches, we know our members value face-to-face banking. We are now the last banking branch in town on 100 high streets across the UK. Recently, we became the last branch in town in Marlborough. Bryan Rumbold, Branch Manager, said: “When you have customers thanking you for just being a presence in the community, it makes you realise how important and impactful our Branch Promise really is. The reassurance of having a Nationwide branch in towns across the country is invaluable.” Find out about our Branch Promise: http://spr.ly/6044Qvvq6 - Everywhere we have a branch, we will be there until at least the start of 2028.

  • This week, we hosted our annual Big Nationwide Quiz of the Year, in support of our Nationwide Fairer Futures partner, Action for Children. Out of the 127 teams that took part, this year’s champions were our Brand, Social, and Content Team (naturally 😉). Funds raised by colleagues through the event will go towards Action for Children’s Secret Santa campaign, to help buy essentials such as warm clothes, a hot meal, or a special Christmas present for a vulnerable child. If you'd like to help a vulnerable child feel the magic of Christmas, there's still time to donate: http://spr.ly/6048Qi6y2 #NationwideFairerFutures

Career highlight #2 this week - supporting #BBCScamSafe in Stockport with Stop Scams UK. It amazed and saddened me to hear from so many victims who haven’t sought help after being scammed. If you’ve been scammed tell your Bank or Building Society immediately - don’t be embarrassed. Luckily we got to share some great advice and support and remember, Nationwide Building Society customers can call our Scam Checker service and get peace of mind before making a payment.

🚨 Thank you, Stockport!🚨 The #BBCScamSafe road show came to an end today with Stop Scams UK members Nationwide Building Society and NatWest Group joining the BBC’s Nick Stapleton on Morning Live. Jim Winters, Head of Economic Crime at Nationwide Building Society, talked Nick through the latest fraud stats that his company was seeing in real-time. “Nationwide operates a scam checker service for its customers where they can call us and check a transaction out to see if it’s genuine before they make it," Jim told BBC Morning Live. "Already this morning we’re seeing those calls up around 20%, which is actually great news, because it means people are taking care before they commit to a payment, to check it out, and see if it’s genuine or not.” Stuart Skinner, Fraud Expert at NatWest Group, was also in Stockport where he spoke to Nick about the bank’s latest research around purchase scams. “Purchase scams are around 80% of the total scam problem, so that’s people buying goods online," he said. "The three biggest goods that end up being a scam are mobile phones, iPads and high-end electrical goods, and online ticketing for big concerts.” A huge thank you to the teams at Nationwide Building Society and NatWest Group for all their help in making today such a big success. On Thursday evening, EastEnders character Jean Slater discovered she was the victim of an intricate pension scam as part of a storyline highlighting common scams and frauds. The story was part of BBC’s Scam Safe initiative which saw the soap work with experts in the field, including scams expert Nick Stapleton, The Pensions Regulator and Stop Scams UK. Stop Scams UK Head of Communications James M. was quoted in the press release sent out by the Eastenders team. You can read the story here: https://lnkd.in/eBAMUDVS So after travelling across the country, the road show comes to an end. Thank you to all our members who attended throughout the week Santander UK, TSB Bank, ANNA Money, Starling Bank, Monzo Bank, Lloyds Banking Group, HSBC, Visa, and Barclays and to all our members for supporting the campaign. That's a wrap for 2024, we hope to do it all again next year. Thank you for all your support. Enjoy the bonus photo of the dog sniffing out a scam. 🐶

  • Today we have announced our half year results. We continue to make good progress against our strategy: Banking - but fairer, more rewarding, and for the good of society. As well as achieving excellent financial performance, we have delivered record value to our members through better rates and incentives, and leading levels of customer service. We have also maximised the impact we have in communities with the recent launch of Nationwide Fairer Futures, supporting those dealt an unfair hand by tackling some of the biggest issues affecting society today. Our CEO, Debbie Crosbie, said: “Nationwide delivered record first half growth in both mortgages and deposits, and record member value. Over the past 18 months, our mutual model has enabled us to provide over £3.5 billion in member value, including £729 million through the Nationwide Fairer Share Payment. Following our acquisition of Virgin Money on 1 October, we’ve recorded a gain of £2.3bn, as the value of net assets acquired is well above the price we paid. This gain provides significant headroom to cover our investment in integration, as well as in service and value. Future profits generated by Virgin Money can now be used for the benefit of customers, rather than being paid to external shareholders.” Read more: http://spr.ly/6185tncEL

More fantastic recognition for Nationwide Building Society and The Mortgage Works last week… On Thursday, Nationwide and The Mortgage Works were both ranked as five-star mortgage providers at the Financial Adviser Service Awards - widely considered as the benchmark for service standards within retail financial services. On Friday, Nationwide were also named the “Best Building Society” at the Your Mortgage Awards, with The Mortgage Works picking up “Best Buy-to-Let Mortgage Lender and “Best Professional Buy-to-Let Mortgage Lender.” It’s great to see all of our teams at Nationwide continuing to support us in delivering best in class service for our customers and intermediary partners.

  • Through Nationwide Fairer Futures, we’ve partnered with Action for Children, because no child deserves to miss out on a safe and happy childhood. For vulnerable children across the UK, Christmas is anything but magical. No presents. No festive food – maybe no food at all. Their memories of Christmas could be going to bed hungry, being too cold to sleep and losing all hope when Santa doesn’t come. Become a Secret Santa with Action for Children and you could help a vulnerable child feel the magic of Christmas. Your donation could give the essentials of warm clothes, a hot meal, or a special Christmas present just for them. Charlotte Kensett, Director of Social Impact said: “Christmas is a time for giving – not just to friends and family but also to charity. Our research shows, more than four in ten people would consider reducing spend on presents in order to give more to good causes. We encourage anyone who can, to support Action for Children’s Secret Santa campaign to give vulnerable children and families hope and support at this time of year. As a mutual, we work for the good of society as well as for the good of our members. Our social impact programme, Nationwide Fairer Futures, aims to change hundreds of thousands of lives for the better.” Donate here: http://spr.ly/6049stSKS #NationwideFairerFutures
