  • Last week, the final, critical round of UN talks on the first global treaty to end plastic waste took place in Busan, South Korea 🇰🇷. The plastic crisis is widely recognised as a threat to human health, biodiversity, and the climate 🌎. Whilst plastic is an essential part of our everyday lives, currently the world produces over 462 million tons of plastic per year. At current rates of growth, global plastic pollution could triple by 2040 - unless we take immediate action. There is growing public, private, and government support for action 🙌: > Over 175 nations agree that we must unite and ratify a global treaty to end plastic pollution. > Over 250 businesses agree that we need a shared set of global rules to end plastic pollution. > Nearly 3 million people are calling for a strong, binding Global Plastic Pollution treaty. > 85% of people want a global ban on single-use plastics. The UN Global Plastics Treaty 📑 will create a legally binding and equitable global agreement that defines tangible steps required and timelines to change how we both produce, and consume, plastic. The key areas are: high pollution risk products (like single use and packaging), introducing design requirements for plastic products, and introducing mechanisms to ensure effective implementation of these changes. #Plastic #GlobalPlasticTreaty #PlasticPollution

  • With so many announcements and news pieces released around COP29, insightful reports can easily slip through the cracks. Luckily, we've pulled together our top 5 reports from the climate conference, in a handy list! 1️⃣ State of the Climate 2024 This year is on track to be the warmest year on record, and 2015-2024 will be the warmest ten years on record. https://lnkd.in/egDjnuTX 2️⃣ COP29 Special Report on Climate Change and Health Prioritising health and well-being in climate action is not only a moral and legal imperative, but a strategic opportunity to unlock transformative health benefits, secure economic opportunity, and ensure a just and equitable future. Full report: https://lnkd.in/eM7tUzQx A handy summary: https://lnkd.in/eafrYeAM 3️⃣ Raising the Bar: Strengthening Forest Ambition in Nationally Determined Contributions Forest targets are largely missing from national climate action plans, with less than half setting a forest-specific emissions mitigation target, and only 4% with explicit references to deforestation and conversion free production and supply chains. https://lnkd.in/eYc-nGGE 4️⃣ Opportunities to empower climate action in the horn of Africa and the Sahel for agriculture and nature under the NCQG African nations, while contributing minimally to global greenhouse gas emissions, are disproportionately impacted by the socio-economic burdens of climate change. This report identifies critical barriers, funding gaps, and actionable recommendations for enhancing mobilisation and channeling of climate finance to the region. https://lnkd.in/e6N2xaED 5️⃣ ClimateTech in Focus: Innovations for a Greener Supply Chain Identifies key areas where ClimateTech can lead to significant emission reductions - by focusing on traceability, hard-to-abate sectors, and other imminent issues. It highlights the importance of innovative finance models in bridging the gap between concept and market-ready solutions, and includes 12 global case studies. https://lnkd.in/gXBxRVCm BONUS: For up to date trackers on climate and nature, check out the links below: Climate Action Tracker - thermometer & more https://lnkd.in/eiWQhS4 Nature4Climate - nbs commitment tracker https://lnkd.in/eXCXGQjv #COP29 #ClimateChange #ClimateAction #ClimateCrisis #COP COP29 Azerbaijan World Meteorological Organization World Health Organization CIAT Tree Aid CGIAR United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) Pacific Economic Cooperation Council Shanghai Climate Week

  • It's Nature and Biodiversity Day at COP29, so let's take a look at the potential of nature-based solutions (NbS). NbS are powerful tools to tackle climate change by addressing both mitigation (reducing greenhouse gas emissions) and adaptation (helping communities and ecosystems cope with climate impacts). According to the IPCC, NbS can contribute 1/3 of the emissions reductions needed by 2030 to meet the Paris Agreement goals. NbS are also highly cost-effective, with an estimated cost of just $10–100 per ton of CO₂ sequestered. Despite this, nature's presence in the negotiations at COP29 Azerbaijan has been relatively scarce. What's been announced so far? 🌳 The Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Market (ICVCM) approved 3 new methodologies for REDD+ carbon credits - marking a new chapter for the forest carbon market. 🌳 The Forest & Climate Leaders' Partnership (FCLP) reported that $10 billion has been contributed (out of $12 billion committed) by participants for forest conservation and restoration activities, in the first three years of the Global Forest Finance Pledge. 🌳 Brazil presented its Climate Investment and Ecological Transformation Platform (BIP) which will mobilise national and international capital to support the climate transition and ecological transformation plans. The initiative will coordinate projects in biodiversity and other areas, acting as a bridge between investors and plans from various ministries. 🌳 BTG Pactual Timberland Investment Group crossed a $500 million milestone on its way towards its goal of mobilizing $1 billion for its Latin American Reforestation Strategy. But more needs to be done. Today, a group of 100 organisations and leaders has issued an urgent nature statement, calling on Parties at COP29 to address the severe nature finance gap.
