🚀 Unlocking the Midlands’ £20bn Energy Potential 🌍 Earlier this week, we unveiled the Midlands Energy Security White Paper, a bold vision for delivering secure, low-carbon energy and fuelling economic growth across the region. With a quarter of the UK’s fossil fuel capacity and the highest rate of fuel poverty in England, the Midlands faces unique challenges—but also incredible opportunities to lead the clean energy transition. Key highlights from the White Paper: 💡 Innovative projects paving the way: From Nottinghamshire’s STEP fusion programme to Humber’s 2030 Vision - pioneering technologies like fusion energy, battery innovation, hydrogen power, and carbon capture. 🗺️ Integrated energy system planning: Initiatives like Project PRIDE and Local Area Energy Plans showcase how the Midlands is ensuring energy systems are smarter, greener, and future-proof. 🌱 A green jobs revolution: By 2041, the Midlands has the potential to deliver nearly 200,000 green jobs, driving economic growth in clean energy and smart systems. With £20bn in investment potential and 21% of the UK’s electricity generation capacity, the Midlands is leading the charge towards national net zero goals. Voices of leadership: Lord Ravensdale: “Through collaboration, the Midlands will power the UK’s clean energy transformation.” Mayor of the EMCCA Claire Ward: “This White Paper harnesses our region’s innovation and industrial strength, creating well-paid green jobs and sustainable growth.” Mayor of the West Midlands CA Richard Parker: "The Midlands is leading in smart energy solutions and decarbonising our industries" 📖 Dive into the White Paper to learn more: https://lnkd.in/gkfHTEXs Thank you to our amazing taskforce for their contribution to this work: David Cole Daniel MosleyMartin FreerMaria P MachancosesAdrian SmithDr Angela Needle FEI Phillipa Slater CEng FICE Matthew RhodesGordon Telling Simon BalmerSimon Green Steve Goldspink Tim Lord Chris NorburyIlina Sen Johnathan Reynolds Ghenadie Bulat Brian Tilley Jon Saltmarsh #MidlandsEngine #CleanEnergy #NetZero #GreenJobs #EnergyInnovation #MidlandsEnergy

An important week for our regional economy, and it was god timing to share a few thoughts from my 30 years of economic regeneration journey at the Midlands Engine event in Nottingham. I really welcome the launch of the Midlands Growth Story—an interactive tool for partners, policymakers, and investors. The Growth Story combines data, analysis, and impact stories to showcase the region’s strengths and opportunities. 📊 **Economic Indicators**: Use these to inform decision-making and develop growth strategies. 📈 **Project Pipeline**: Explore the interactive project pipeline to identify high-growth investment opportunities. 💡 **Case Studies**: Identify local assets and collaboration opportunities through detailed case studies. 🏚️ Simultaneously, the government launched its White Paper on Devolution, which has significant implications for Leicester and Leicestershire in 2025. Much of next year will be spent discussing its impact on our City and County. I aim to ensure the voices of businesses, stakeholders, and charities are considered in the final outcome. That's why I called for every stakeholder to look to the bigger prize in devolution and beyond our short term interests. As a long term backer of devolution since the 90s, this is our chance to create a settlement that lasts 50+ years. 💡 Someone joked that my contribution sounded like a Mayoral campaign manifesto! The great thing for me is that I have no 'skin in the game'. As I approach retirement, having worked across all tiers of local authority and now representing the private sector on the Business Board, my only goal is to secure the best possible deal for my home County, free from vested interests. I will listen and learn before setting out a more considered view on the best path forward. The event featured great discussions and networking with regional leaders, all striving for positive outcomes! 👂 Listening and speaking at the Midlands Engine event reminded me of the massive task ahead to help our county and wider region address #transport, #skills, #inclusiveGrowth, #energysecurity, #infrastructure, #investment, #sustainability, #innovation, #productivity, and #education. #transport #skills #inclusiveGrowth #energysecurity #Infratsructure #investment #sustainability #innovation #productivity #Education # Nick King Sarah Windrum Ian Griffin Irshad Mulla Dr Nik Kotecha OBE DL Mohammad Jamei Jewel Miah Dr. Jeevun Sandher Narinder Nijjar Professor Delma Dwight Lukasz Gasienica-Fronek Claire Ward Scott Knight Scott Knowles DL @ Time to take stock over the Festive period and come back invigorated for the debate ahead.

The Midlands has been critical to UK energy security and economic growth for over a century. A new White Paper from the Midlands Engine, whom we’ve been delighted to support, shows that the region is ready to lead again. The transition from fossil fuels to clean energy is the critical challenge and biggest opportunity of our time. This report shows that the region has the right mix of talent, innovative businesses and thriving communities to meet the challenge and seize the opportunity of creating a sustainable future. Within the report are practical actions for government and industry to take, from investing in local talent, training the next generation for green jobs to supporting businesses to create solutions that work for their communities. This includes £20bn of investment potential and the opportunity to create nearly 200,000 green jobs by 2041. E.ON UK are already showing what’s possible. Through our collaboration with Coventry City Council, we are delivering innovative solutions that bring benefits to people today, such as combining insulation, battery installation and time of use tariffs, as well as investing in the city’s energy infrastructure of the future. Our belief is that, by working with cities and communities, we can lower bills for all, help make businesses more competitive and decarbonise. To move faster we need to address outdated market rules, tackle policy costs that unfairly inflate electricity bills and invest in the technology that makes a clean energy system work for customers. The Midlands has always been a powerhouse, now it’s time to power the clean energy future. https://lnkd.in/emGiYPBj #CleanEnergy #MidlandsEngine #Innovation #Skills #EnergySecurity

On Day 18 of our #Christmas2024 countdown we look at the work that we and our partners have done this year to help develop the nuclear industry in the Midlands. ERA and the Midlands Engine are the founding members of Midlands Nuclear, a partnership which is bringing together the supply chain, developers, generators, researchers and skills providers who are already based, or interested in operating in the Midlands. Building on the government's decision to develop the new £20 billion STEP Fusion plant at West Burton in Nottinghamshire, the Midlands is making the case for sustained investment into nuclear and related industries in the Midlands. A report by ERA and the Midlands Engine identified 7 nuclear priorities for the Midlands: 1. Support Nuclear Manufacturing Sites. 2. Support development of new nuclear generation sites in the region. 3. Support the growth of the Fusion Energy sector. 4. Establish a regional nuclear consortium. 5. Support nuclear skills development. 6. Support the creation of nuclear test, validation, and R&D facilities 7. Support the siting assessment of the UK's long-term Geological Disposal Facility. This year, Midlands Nuclear has been working with the Midlands Net Zero Hub to undertake a Nuclear Skills and a Nuclear Siting assessment for the region. - The Skills Study: Is assessing current capabilities, future needs, and any skill gaps, guiding educational institutions in curriculum development and helping nuclear businesses identify funding needs. - The Siting Study: Is creating an ‘investment brochure’ outlining potential sites, community engagement and supply chain opportunities, to attract nuclear development to the Midlands. Midlands Nuclear is working with a range of leading industrial and research partners in the region to deliver its priorities.
