This year the BBC is celebrating the centenary of its first broadcast in 1925 of the iconic Shipping Forecast. But did you know what is now the Shipping Forecast was first called Weather Shipping? It aired on 1 January 1924, a year earlier than the BBC’s debut broadcast, and instead of the radio was picked up by ships over a telegraphic messaging system. These days, the Maritime & Coastguard Agency (MCA) is ultimately responsible for the provision of Maritime Safety Information (MSI) to ships at sea, which includes the broadcast of warnings and forecasts. The MCA works closely with the Met Office, which prepares and issues routine forecasts and initiates weather warnings for dissemination by HM Coastguard as well as the BBC. The UK has become one of the leaders internationally in upholding the safe operation of smaller Remotely Operated Unmanned Vessels (ROUVs) with new guidance published by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA). It puts the UK among the first in the world to formally set out the scope of regulation and operators’ obligations in this emerging category, as well as the MCA’s commitments to well-founded oversight that keeps people safe. As well as exercises to practice rescues and incident responses, coastguard rescue officers undertake training modules focussing on casualty care, missing persons searches, VHF radio use and more. Rich from Hayling Island Coastguard Rescue Team gives us a quick insight of what he has learnt as part of his training.

While many of us were enjoying our Christmas with friends and families last year, coastguard rescue officers around the country were on standby and ready to respond at any moment. Dozens of Christmas Day calls came in 2023 for HM Coastguard, which always keeps watch for people in trouble by the coast and at sea. Here are some of those festive emergencies: https://lnkd.in/e2R9zThU
