Max Farrell reflects on two years as President of LAI's London chapter 🎉
Founder & CEO, LDN Collective | President, Land Economics Society (London) | Chair of Built Environment, West London Business | Fellow RSA | Lead Judge, Healthy City Design Awards | Podcast Host, Collectively Speaking
🌗 Tomorrow is the last day of my two year term as President of the Lambda Alpha International (LAI) London chapter, so it seemed like a good time to look back on everything that's happened. It's been an incredible journey, with an exceptional programme of events and more than double the number of members, with many more joining in the New Year 🎉 Given the social and environmental crises we are facing in 2025, land economics has a massive role to play. Making sure the land we have delivers the maximum social, environmental and economic benefits. Best of luck to incoming President Frances Heeney, the Exec Group and fabulous members who have made the last two years so joyful and enriching. Who knew land economics could be so much fun?! 🤩

Long anticipated updates to the National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF) were released yesterday with the December 2024 revisions. So what does this mean for you? At our Outlook 2025 event, Jo Davis shared her perspective on the #NPPF changes that will unlock development in 2025. Do you agree that this will be a ‘game-changer’? #planning #realestate #housing Helen Collins

🎄 As I pack up my desk for the Christmas break, I want to wish all of my clients, colleagues, contacts and friends a merry Christmas and all the very best for 2025 🎊🥂 🏆 2024 has been another fantastic year for Brabners, winning 13 awards, including Legal Team of the Year at the EG Awards and also #1 Best Law Firm to Work For and #6 Best Large Company to Work For in the UK at the Best Companies Awards. 👏🏻 We are also incredibly proud to have 63 colleagues across 44 practice areas ranked in this year’s Legal 500, and to be recognised as a top tier firm in 11 categories. Wowzers. ❤️ Love the firm, the industry and my fabulous property friends (Sam Crothers, Helena Davies, Jodie Fraser-Smith, Rachael Cunliffe, Helen Gardner & Kirsty Jolley to mention a few). This says it all, local government and planning reform is long overdue!! The Labour Party hold your nerve 🌹

Buckle up! There was a real humdinger at Planning Committee in #Somerset yesterday… 🏗️ Yes, it’s that time of month again - I’ve been at committee! We had 3 applications to consider: (1) 46 homes (16 affordable) in #CastleCary - refused ❌ (2) 30 homes (11 affordable) in #KeintonMandeville (pic below) - refused ❌ (3) 60 homes (21 affordable) on the outskirts of #Yeovil - approved ✅ As you can imagine, during the debates I took great delight in reminding my colleagues of the severe need for housing in Somerset - and particularly houses for social rent. I reminded colleagues of the changes to the NPPF - and the need not just for “clear” reasons for refusal but “strong” reasons. However, that seemed to fall on deaf ears… Yet again we had a number of determined residents declaring there is no need for housing in their particular town or village - which is fine until you go on Homefinder Somerset and see that 300 people applied for a 1 bed flat when it became available over the summer… 💰 On one occasion, when I took to the mic to remind my colleagues about the risk of appeal and the costs involved, I said that making indefensible decisions at committee makes us look stupid. It’s true, after all - if refused plans go to appeal and get overturned then all the negotiated S106 contributions are at risk: the £422,000+ for schools in Castle Cary… the £267,000 for schools in Keinton Mandeville… not to mention the £10s of thousands for local play areas and sports pitches etc. Can you guess what the response was from one of my colleagues? It was made in the public forum so I’m not exactly breaking any confidences… (although I won’t name them to save their blushes): 🎤 “Well I’m happy to look stupid!” I am beginning to wonder if Councillors should be made personally liable for paying the costs of appeal…
