🎄🌟 It's the final day of our ERA and HyDEX #Christmas2024 countdown. As the year draws to a close, we want to take a moment to reflect on an incredible year of collaboration, innovation, and progress in energy research and hydrogen development. Over the last 12 months we have held over 25 events in the Midlands, London, Europe and Asia, which were attended by more than 1700 business people, researchers, students, policy-makers and many others with an interest in #energy and #netzero. Together, we explored groundbreaking ideas and solutions to accelerate the transition to #netzero. 🎄 Today, on day 23 of our ERA and HyDEX 🎅 #Christmas2024 countdown, we look back to the 'Decarbonising UK Domestic Heating' event that we helped to organise in November with the University of Nottingham Energy Institute, at the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) in London. Chaired by Anna Stephenson from the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, this free event showcased some of the pioneering research being undertaken to decarbonise domestic heating. Some topic highlights from the event included: - High-Performance Hydrogen-Powered Heat Pumps: Advancements in hydrogen-fueled heat pump technology, offering a potential pathway to zero-carbon heating solutions. - Flexible Air Source Heat Pumps: Adaptable air source heat pump designs tailored for efficient domestic heating decarbonisation. - Novel Aqua-Ammonia Heating Concepts: An innovative heating system based on aqua-ammonia, highlighting its potential for efficient and sustainable home heating. - Thermal Energy Storage Systems: Exploring advanced thermal storage solutions to improve efficiency and flexibility in heating systems. - Low-Carbon Retrofit Solutions: Techniques and technologies to retrofit existing housing stock, reducing carbon emissions without requiring complete rebuilds. - Integrated Smart Energy Systems: The role of smart energy systems in balancing supply and demand for domestic heating. 🎅🎁 On Day 22 of our HyDEX and Energy Research Accelerator (ERA) #Christmas2024 countdown, we're highlighting the work that we've done on our HyDEX programme this year to develop understanding of #hydrogen amongst researchers, students, business people and the general public. 🌍 Our free Hydrogen 101 e-learning module is a concise web based programme which focuses on hydrogen's critical role in achieving the UK’s net-zero targets. Since its launch, the module has: - Had over 2,000 views. - Supported STEM engagement activities for students, providing the basis for preparatory materials. 📚 The 30-minute introductory e-learning course covers: - Hydrogen’s importance in the UK energy strategy. - Careers and skills needed in the hydrogen sector. - A certificate of completion is also awarded to everyone completing the online course. Over the course of the year, ERA has run a number of programmes for researchers based at our partner universities who have an an interest in energy and #netzero. Each workshop has been specially designed to provide researchers with the knowledge, tools and confidence they need to thrive in their academic journey. Some of our ERA Research Skills programmes this year have included: 🎓 ERA Skills Retreat - Raising your Research Profile Researchers boosted their profiles with video bios and pitch training—a big shoutout to video specialist, Rob Glass, for helping participants shine! 🎄🎅 On Day 20 of our #Christmas2024 countdown, we look back to November when HyDEX and the Energy Research Accelerator (ERA) launched our report on 'Accelerating hydrogen adoption across the UK economy'. The report examined ways to decarbonise key UK industries such as Aviation, Road Transport, Construction and Farming. It was produced as a result of a number of focused workshops with business leaders in each industrial sector. With the UK Government's commitment to #netzero goals, the report delivers a clear roadmap for overcoming barriers and capturing #hydrogen opportunities to stay competitive in the global race. Launched at Madano's offices in London, the report provides a number cross-sector insights and strategic recommendations to speed up hydrogen adoption. 🔑 Key Recommendations include: 1️⃣ Government Policy Alignment: A need for better coordination between departments like Department for Energy Security and Net Zero and Department for Transport (DfT), United Kingdom to prevent delays in hydrogen projects spanning multiple sectors. 2️⃣ Public Awareness Campaign: A campaign to improve understanding of hydrogen’s benefits and costs will help drive demand and resolve the 'chicken-and-egg' dilemma. 3️⃣ Address Skills Gaps: To support the hydrogen transition, training programs are essential to bridge skills shortages in the sector and ensure a smooth shift away from high-carbon energy. 4️⃣ Hydrogen Infrastructure Roadmap: Government must create a clear, sector-specific roadmap to guide industry stakeholders and developers in the deployment of hydrogen infrastructure. 5️⃣ Stronger Financial Incentives: Increased financial support, such as raising the carbon price, to encourage investment in hydrogen and reduce reliance on fossil fuels. The Midlands has the potential to be at the very heart of the the low-carbon energy transition. There are exciting new initiatives in the region such as the STEP Fusion plant in Nottinghamshire, and other technologies being developed in new nuclear, hydrogen and batteries, supported by our world-leading universities. The regional momentum and pioneering spirit in energy means that there is also huge potential for high-quality energy jobs to be created, almost 200,000 of them! On Day 19 of our #Christmas2024 countdown, we're spotlighting our #Hydrogen Innovation Support for small and medium sized businesses (SMEs). HyDEX enabled 11 SMEs to develop their hydrogen technologies and services through our Innovation Fund. The work with SMEs included improving prototypes, conducting feasibility studies and supporting additional research. Some of the projects have included work with: - Greenco: Producing hydrogen from forest waste - Hy-Met Limited: Building hydrogen energy meters - Nium: Improving green ammonia production - Stoli Chem: Producing hydrogen from reactors Thanks to the academics who worked with these and other business, including Amirpiran Amiri of Aston University; Volkan Degirmenci of University of Warwick; Yousif Al-sagheer, Dr. Miloud Ouadi and Debbie Smith of University of Birmingham, and to Dr Katherine Mycock of HyDEX for managing the Innovation Support programme. On Day 18 of our #Christmas2024 countdown we look at the work that we and our partners have done this year to help develop the nuclear industry in the Midlands. ERA and the Midlands Engine are the founding members of Midlands Nuclear, a partnership which is bringing together the supply chain, developers, generators, researchers and skills providers who are already based, or interested in operating in the Midlands. Building on the government's decision to develop the new £20 billion STEP Fusion plant at West Burton in Nottinghamshire, the Midlands is making the case for sustained investment into nuclear and related industries in the Midlands. A report by ERA and the Midlands Engine identified 7 nuclear priorities for the Midlands: 1. Support Nuclear Manufacturing Sites. 2. Support development of new nuclear generation sites in the region. 3. Support the growth of the Fusion Energy sector. 4. Establish a regional nuclear consortium. 5. Support nuclear skills development. 6. Support the creation of nuclear test, validation, and R&D facilities 7. Support the siting assessment of the UK's long-term Geological Disposal Facility. This year, Midlands Nuclear has been working with the Midlands Net Zero Hub to undertake a Nuclear Skills and a Nuclear Siting assessment for the region. - The Skills Study: Is assessing current capabilities, future needs, and any skill gaps, guiding educational institutions in curriculum development and helping nuclear businesses identify funding needs. - The Siting Study: Is creating an ‘investment brochure’ outlining potential sites, community engagement and supply chain opportunities, to attract nuclear development to the Midlands.
