About us

HOP is a multi-disciplinary practice of Consulting Civil and Structural Engineers, at the forefront of high quality building and engineering projects on both a national and international level. We work across the whole range of engineering, building, and surveying fields. We are just as happy working on a £380 million power station, as we are advising home-owners on smaller, residential projects such as structural surveys and party walls. Our expertise also extends to Health & Safety advice (including acting as Principal Designer), Site Acquisitions and Project Management. We also have our own team working on ‘wet build’ and underwater engineering projects as well more diverse environmental studies and appraisals. We received Best Business of the Year at the BAHBAs 2017. Previously trading as Hemsley Orrell Partnership. ask@hop.uk.com @HOP_Consulting

  • Each year over the festive period, we choose to make donations to a local charity in lieu of giving Christmas cards and gifts to one another. This year we have again chosen to make donations to Off The Fence Trust Limited, a local charity working to provide important poverty outreach services across Brighton and Hove especially throughout the winter season. Our team are looking to donate a variety of warm, winter clothing items to help with the charities Antifreeze initiative. Well done to all the team at HOP for their generosity, and a massive thank you to Off The Fence Trust Limited for all the important work they do to help those in need all year round. • HOP are delighted to announce the new Child Development Centre (CDC) at Crawley Hospital has been recognised and recently won the ‘Best Refurbishment’ project award at the IHEEM Healthcare Estates Awards. The new CDC will provide children of all ages with a range of multi-disciplinary services within a new, bright space relocated from its former location within the hospital. HOP undertook the Structural and Civil Engineering design input for the refurbishment. Our work was delivered from early Client-side RIBA design stages through to a Design & Build appointment with the Contractor. This included a thorough building assessment to review overhead hoisting, service distribution and a major remodelling of the building’s floor layout. Specialist access equipment and a bespoke audiology consultant space, required an innovative self weight trade-off, to accommodate the proposed load increase for the specialist environment. A huge congratulation to everyone who was involved on the project for all their hard work! Big things are happening at Worthing Hospital 🚨 Today marks the beginning of a ground-breaking £7m expansion of our Emergency Department at Worthing Hospital! 🎉 Joined by urgent and emergency care colleagues, capital development teams, and construction partners Morgan Sindall Construction, we celebrated the start of building works for a new Urgent Treatment Centre (UTC) in West Sussex. The new UTC will provide urgent medical help for non-life-threatening conditions, offering appointments via NHS 111 and equipped to diagnose and treat common illnesses. Hospital Director, Stephen Mardlin shared, “We’re delighted to see the construction begin on this £7m expansion of our Emergency Department because it will have such a transformative effect for our patients, A&E colleagues and the rest of the hospital.” West Worthing MP, Rebecca Cooper, praised the investment, highlighting the positive impact on local healthcare. She said: “Such a significant investment in the town’s Emergency Department and creation of a new Urgent Treatment Centre is excellent news for everyone living locally.  “Speaking with staff today, it’s great to hear how excited they are to improve access and facilities for patients. I am delighted to see the works get underway and cannot wait to return next year when the UTC opens to the public.”  Worthing Hospital’s Emergency Department, the busiest in West Sussex, will see significant improvements, treating at least 40,000 patients a year with the new UTC. Designed by Crowther Architects and constructed by Morgan Sindall, the new facility is expected to be ready by Autumn 2025. This investment is part of University Hospitals Sussex’s commitment to expand and modernise the Trust’s Emergency Departments. 🌟

  • HOP have been providing fast track structural engineering support and design services to make safe Worthing Pier following storm damage and loss or damage to several of its legs. The situation needed temporarily closure of the pier in October, to keep people safe and enable stabilisation works. A multidisciplinary team from Worthing Borough Council, Mackley, HOP Engineers and others have carefully managed the situation. The pier is exposed to complex tide and wave action from the sea. It also has a rich history of intervention including having been ‘severed’ during WWII to prevent it being used as a landing stage during invasion. Understanding and predicting how such a structure might react and balancing conservation and safety, yet minimising disruption is highly challenging. HOP fast tracked an inspection, advised and assisted development of a plan to tackle the challenges, recommending and designing a new steel support structure such that the deck could be secured in the area.   HOP Directors Tristan Banks and Nigel Hosker said “It is testament to a great team and supply chain, that works of this nature can be successfully delivered in as little as 5 weeks. It has very much been the Teams focus to get the pier open again as soon as possible, so the public can enjoy promenading, soaking up its heritage and its offerings”.. J.T.MACKLEY & CO.LIMITED Worthing Borough Council To find out more about how HOP have assisted please visit Worthing Borough Council's website 🙂

  • We recently held our annual HOP Day Out training event, on a lovely sunny Friday afternoon ☀️ This HOP event has been running for over ten years and it gives everyone the chance to work collaboratively in teams whilst trying out a number of new activities. This year we embarked on a scavenger hunt across East Sussex stopping off at various different HOP projects along the way and finishing up at the Modelo Lounge for some refreshments and a well-earned dinner. It was brilliant to see all the Team putting their heads together to solve clues, carve pumpkins or build a Da-Vinci Bridge, whilst enjoying the sunshine and fresh air. The Teams travelled to some lovely locations and had some scrummy food when we reached our final destination. A huge thank you to Ridgeview Wine Estate, Avtrade, Brighton & Hove Albion Football Club, Sea Lanes Brighton, Kingsway to the Sea and then the Modelo Lounge for hosting us!  #engineering #structuralengineering #civilengineering #marineengineering #engineeringlife #training #stafftrainingday

MILESTONE REACHED AT HURSTPIERPOINT COLLEGE We are thrilled to announce a significant milestone at Hurstpierpoint College’s highly anticipated swimming pool project. Last week, the completion of the reinforced concrete (RC) frame marked a major step forward, paving the way for the next exciting phases: the installation of the steel framework, along with brick and blockwork.   With construction now visibly progressing on the state-of-the-art, 25-metre competition swimming pool, the structure is beginning to take shape on the site of the former theatre building. This modern facility promises to become a key feature of the College's campus, offering students a premium competition pool that meets the highest standards.   Designed with meticulous attention, the pool will feature six lanes and conform to #ASA competition standards, ensuring it is equipped for both training and competitive swimming. The project represents a collaborative effort between Miller Bourne Architects, Wenham O’Brien, HOP Consulting Limited, RED Engineering, FT Leisure, and MCS, who have all brought their expertise to create this impressive facility.   In addition to the pool itself, the building will include thoughtfully designed amenities to enhance the students experience. These will include modern changing rooms complete with toilets and showers, accessible changing rooms for disabled users, a dedicated storage area, and a welcoming reception area.   These works are due to complete during Spring 2025.   #WeAreHurst #IndependentSchool #construction #loveconstruction

  • Who doesn’t like a slice of cake…?!? We do and recently held our annual HOP Macmillan Coffee Morning, which was definitely more about the cake. The team constructed various sweet (and some savoury) goodies…. then got together to demolish them shortly after, whilst raising money for a charity that is hugely important to many of us at HOP. Together we raised over £130 for Macmillan! Good job Team and great effort by everyone who took part! 🎉 #engineering #macmillan #macmillancoffeemorning #structuralengineering #civilengineering #marineengineering #engineeringlife

  • Beautiful, sustainable and swimmable! HOP provided Civil and Structural Engineering expertise to the new The Reeds accommodation at the South Lodge Hotel in Crabtree, West Sussex. The eight Eco Lodges are ‘off-grid’ and served by a reed-bed treatment system. Rainwater harvesting adds to the overall sustainability of the project with surface water runoff re-circulated in the adjacent swimming lake. The structure works in harmony with the surrounding woodland to minimise the impact on existing trees and ecosystems.
