  • Exciting opportunity to hear about the great work of Jo Lindsay Walton at University of Sussex Jo's work in digital sustainability is vital. The publication of 'The Cloud and the Climate: Navigating AI-Powered Futures' earlier this year was a landmark moment in our sector, providing a fantastic resource for education and advancement of IT and cloud sustainability. You are all invited to our next Research Forum, Monday 2 December at 2pm. Join in person, or on zoom - register for a link! Our Research Forum is a space for researchers to meet and share ideas and interests. At each forum we welcome three or more speakers to share work at different stages of development. On Monday 2nd December we will hear from : Ian Winter, The Domestic Light Project (https://domesticlight.art/). This  is a multi-year project that explores the nature of our relationship to the character of light, home, and the passage of time – through the collection of a year+ l data time-lapse of spectral colour of light in homes worldwide. Ian is interested in discussion and observations about the creation and collection of the colour data at the heart of the project, and whether peer to peer artistic and cultural networks can facilitate new possibilities of observation of our environment and the exploration of expanded temporalities through data timelapse. Daniel Millum, AI and the Tricontinental Revolution: applying Machine Learning and Minimal Computing approaches to Global South library collections. This work is based on one of our collections at University of Sussex, the Tricontinental bulletin produced in Cuba by OSPAAL which was particularly influential in the 1960s and 1970s. The project aims to apply Computational and Machine Learning (ML) techniques based on the principles of Minimal Computing to the digitised Tricontinental texts. Jo Lindsay Walton, Digital Sustainability 2024. This was an umbrella initiative for three projects, funded by Innovate UK, Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC)/Future Observatory, and University of Sussex, School of Media, Arts and Humanities AHRC IAA. Together these projects introduced arts and humanities methodologies, including storytelling and play, into the complex and rapidly evolving field of digital sustainability. Highlights included the report The Cloud and the Climate: Navigating AI-Powered Futures, the launch of Climate Acuity and the Digital Sustainability Game (https://climateacuity.org/), and our work with industry partners including Greenly | Certified B Corp and Greenpixie. We'll reflect on these activities and think about next steps. Back to work after a wonderful week in Barcelona and an inspiring experience at the FinOpsX conference! A special thanks to the FinOps Foundation team and Europe lead Ruben Vander Stockt for organizing such an exceptional event – from the incredible lineup of speakers to the flawless coordination, stunning location, and great food and drinks.  After attending two keynote sessions, plenty of insightful studio room sessions, and countless conversations with FinOps enthusiasts and vendors in the world of FinOps, I am happy to share my key takeaways:  ✅ **Data & FOCUS: The Foundation of FinOps Success ** Getting the data right is the cornerstone of FinOps. There were plenty of use cases where FOCUS (FinOps Open Cost and Usage Specification) enabled teams, vendors, and organizations to standardize and accelerate collaboration, ultimately delivering invaluable business insights.  My favorite quote was by Kumar YB from The HEINEKEN Company:   "People love putting their emotions into their spreadsheets."  My life got a little bit better by having this quote in it😁!  ✅ **Expanding the Scope**   While cloud is the core use case of FinOps, there’s a clear trend toward applying its principles beyond the cloud: SaaS, on-premise datacenters, licensing, just to name a few. The ecosystem is clearly growing, but with it also the complexity of integrating new vendors, personas, and use cases.  With data as the backbone, FOCUS will need to adapt to support this broader scope. It’ll be exciting to watch how this evolves over time.  ✅ **Sustainability: My Personal Favorite**   Sessions I enjoyed the most came from Vik S. at Mastercard, Ferran Grau Horta at Adevinta Spain and Dany Daya at Etsy, showcasing their efforts to calculate carbon footprint for cloud usage and datacenters. Both showed their successes, but also clearly articulated the struggles with a lack of standards, granularity, transparency and availability (3 months delay?) in sustainability reporting.  We would need transparent and detailed data from vendors and sustainability standards embedded into frameworks like FOCUS. A special shoutout to James Hall from Greenpixie for demonstrating how relevant data can be integrated into cloud cost data – something I look forward to start working with!  ✅**AI for FinOps and FinOps for AI**   It wasn’t an AI conference, but what is a conference without AI these days? I was thrilled to see fellow Belgians (Jan Peeters and Benjamin van der Maas) from Johnson & Johnson on the final day presenting their impressive use case in front of a large audience, showcasing how they leveraged generative AI to scale anomaly detection in their FinOps processes. As generative AI continues to advance, I expect we’ll see much more innovation in how AI supports FinOps – and vice versa – in the near future.  Exciting times ahead for the FinOps community! A huge thank you again to the organizers for such an incredible experience!  See you all in San Diego? 😊

  • This Wednesday our CEO John Ridd will be speaking at the latest FinOps Connect London Meet-up. Hosted by IBM, this Meetup will look at practical ways we can control how we use cloud to maximise its value to all of us - and our children. Alongside John, there will be lightning talks from Andy Foley (Nationwide Building Society), Daniel Rickards (Telefónica Tech), Mark Butcher (Posetiv Cloud Ltd) and Greg Holmes (Apptio, an IBM Company). Looking forward to another fascinating event, chaired by Mike Bradbury and team. GreenHops IPA will of course be served. #greenops #finpops #sustainable #ai https://lnkd.in/eArxgdvG

    Enabling cloud GreenOps teams globally

After two weeks of back to back conferences, the finale that was FinOps X Europe has ended. Made a very refreshing change to only have to make a short trip to Barcelona rather than a transatlantic flight, but it was the most full-on FinOps X I’ve been to yet. It’s been incredible to watch the maturity of the sustainability conversations increase exponentially with each passing month. Last year most people didn’t know what scope 3 was; now everyone is feeling the pain of poor data compliance/quality, recruitment issues, or the age old problem of engineers not caring about costs. The understanding that prioritising sustainability and using high quality data can be the solution to all these problems is also now commonplace. Exhausting few weeks but the growing community of sustainability advocates and the people you get to meet make it worth it. Thank you FinOps Foundation for putting on a great show. Excited to see what new pins i can collect next time Well done to the Greenpixie team Dave Foster John Ridd Kevin Leslie for your tireless work.

  • Another busy week as two of the most significant events in the Greenpixie calendar - marking our key focuses FinOps and Sustainability - fall on the same week: FinOps X Europe & COP29 Azerbaijan. Greenpixie is once again a proud silver sponsor of the FinOps X in Barcelona. Please say hello to Dave Foster at our sponsor booth, book a meeting with Head of GreenOps James Hall, or catch CEO John Ridd at the sustainability focused talks and keynotes. Meanwhile, COP29 will bring together leaders to advance solutions to the defining issue of our time. This year cloud sustainability is one of the biggest issues on the agenda, with the explosion of cloud and now wasteful AI computation. Greenpixie is pleased to be invited among other thought leaders to debate and discuss a way forward. We've sent our very own Rory Brown to represent Greenpixie and our partners in this debate. Here's to an exciting and important week. #greenops #sustianability #finops #cop29 FinOps Foundation
