As Christmas draws near, it’s important to acknowledge that this time of year can be hard for many of us. The festive season often brings pressures—to be cheerful, to connect, to keep up with everything—and for those feeling alone or managing mental health challenges, it can be especially tough. At Workways Devon Partnership NHS Trust, we support people in navigating these challenges through work, wellbeing, and community. But the truth is, these are things we all work on—clients, colleagues, friends, and family. Setting boundaries is one way we can take care of ourselves during busy or difficult times, allowing space for rest, reflection, and connection. Whether you’re spending this season with loved ones or taking some much-needed time for yourself, it’s okay to approach it in your own way. Kindness, to ourselves and others, can make all the difference. On a lighter note, I’ve been reflecting on the magical snow day in Exeter—the crunch of the snow beneath my feet and the sparkle of the trees in the winter light. That peaceful, quiet beauty is something I’ll keep in my heart this season. We're approaching that "happy" time of the year again, although sometimes, celebrations can take a stressful turn if we can't navigate disagreements 🎄 The holidays are a time for joy, connection, and celebration, but they can also bring differing opinions and tense conversations—especially during Christmas gatherings with family or friends. So, how can we manage disagreements and avoid confrontation while keeping the festive spirit alive? 1️⃣ Choose Connection Over Correction Not every disagreement needs to be “won.” Sometimes, it’s better to let small things slide. “That’s an interesting take—I hadn’t thought of it that way.” This keeps the conversation light and respectful. 2️⃣ Redirect With Grace If a conversation starts getting heated, shift gears with a neutral topic. “Let’s save that for another time—have you tried Aunt Sue’s pie yet? It’s incredible!” 3️⃣ Lead With Empathy Recognize emotions behind opinions. “I see this topic matters to you. I appreciate hearing your perspective.” This shows respect without needing to agree. 4️⃣ Know When to Step Away Sometimes the best way to manage disagreement is to avoid it altogether. A quick pause can help. “I’m going to grab some fresh air. Let’s catch up on something fun when I’m back!” The holidays are about creating memories, not winning debates.
