As the year draws to a close, I wanted to take a moment to say thank you to the many people who’ve made it all possible: To our customers: Thank you for trusting us, challenging us, and letting us be part of your journey. Without you, we’d just be sitting in a very quiet office surrounded by our own products, wondering if we’d gone into the wrong business. To our suppliers: Your support and reliability have kept the wheels turning (sometimes literally). Here’s to another year of working together—and only a few of those panicked “we need it yesterday” calls. To our team at DiscreteHeat : You’re an incredible group of people who make the impossible look like just another Tuesday. I’m endlessly proud of what we’ve achieved together and look forward to the chaos we’ll conquer next year. This year has been full of lessons, growth, and the occasional reminder that even the best-laid plans can go spectacularly sideways. It’s also been a stark reminder that success is never a solo endeavor—it’s a team sport, and I’m lucky to have the best squad in the game. As the UK accelerates towards the Future Homes Standard (FHS), energy-efficient and innovative heating solutions are critical. The Energy House 2.0 testing, conducted by Barratt Developments, Bellway Homes and The University of Salford, provided crucial insights into heating systems designed to meet upcoming standards. FHS requires eliminating gas boilers in favour of low-temperature systems like Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHPs). ASHPs paired with emitters such as ThermaSkirt, Underfloor Heating (UFH), and radiators were rigorously tested under extreme simulated conditions (-5°C to +5°C). Our key takeaways: ·      Continuous operation of an ASHP ensures optimal performance, while intermittent use (like a gas boiler) can lead to inefficiency. ·      ThermaSkirt and UFH deliver the most even heating. ·      ThermaSkirt can offer faster response times and lower running costs. ·      Over-zoning can cause ASHPs to short-cycle, reducing efficiency. ·      UFH on the ground floor combined with ThermaSkirt upstairs could deliver the best cost and performance balance (though untested in this study). ThermaSkirt and UFH are a promising solution for zero-carbon homes, aligning with FHS goals. The research underscores the need for tailored, integrated systems to maximise efficiency and comfort in modern housing. Sooner or later the construction industry will realise that things don't NEED to be the way they always have... If someone brought a radiator to market after the invention of underfloor heating or ThermaSkirt, people would recoil in horror, I'm convinced of that. It's now an outdated way to emit heat in a controllable and comfortable way, particularly in a new build. As technology development is a forward looking activity, we'll continue our mission to flip the status quo. If you're a developer, consultant or house builder making the switch to heat pumps, you don't need to try and get them to fit the old spec.
