I really enjoyed being commissioned by the Glass and Glazing Federation to provide advice, input and expertise on their campaign “Re imagining Homes and Streets of Today"   Across the UK our old and tired housing stock whilst in many instances is beautiful in its vernacular, remains some of the most challenging in Europe in when considering heat loss. In addition, arguments for retrofit and sustainability are often short-sighted – looking at buildings as entities within their own right; isolated objects rather than in their collective context of the street, and more crucially the role the street can play in 21st Britain for setting the framework for a more 'low carbon' way of living.    This campaign looks at how streets can be re-imagined with low traffic neighborhoods, bee bricks and increased green spaces to help encourage biodiversity, through to renewable energy sources and improved glass and glazing to reduce energy bills, speculatively speaking British streets would look considerably different if they were built today. The campaign is centralised around a guide for homeowners on how simple interventions can make homes more energy efficient. https://lnkd.in/emuJUhBb #HomesOfTomorrow #Place #Housing #Street #RetroFit #Sustainability #ESG

Lamb Street is a two-storey mixed-use commercial project, forming part of the wider Bishops Square development in London. Completed in 2023, the project was achieved through close collaboration from the architectural and contractor teams. Some lovely news yesterday, hearing that Hallam & Redmires Rangers Junior Football Club had successfully obtained planning permission for two new repurposed shipping containers, to provide some much-needed changing and toilet provision up at the Club’s home ground in Lodge Moor, Sheffield. The Club was awarded South Yorkshire Grassroots Club of the Year in 2022, largely due to efforts to increase participation in football for women and girls by creating a female-friendly environment, centred around positive female role models. The previous provision of one portaloo shared between all teams meant that the sanitary facilities were becoming a real barrier to accessing the sport, specifically for girls wanting to join the Club. The improvements the container WC accommodation will bring will therefore make a huge difference in further increasing inclusion and equality within the game for young people in the local area. As part of our commitment to Social Value and giving-back, Bond Bryan supported the community club in their bid for the containers (part of a city-wide initiative by Sheffield City Council to find new homes for the former Fargate units, since they were decommissioned several years back.) We also proudly sponsor the Girls U16 side. Since then, we have continued to work with Hallam & Redmires Rangers JFC to develop and oversee the planning application for the container relocation, so this latest update is wonderful to hear on so many levels. We’re looking forward to helping further as the scheme moves into the build-phase in early 2025. If your organisation would like to help out with skills, resources, donations or materials (or you know someone who might) then please do get in touch. #morethandesign #socialvalue #inspiringthenextgeneration Andy Nolan | Viky Mercer

A big thank you last week to Steve Bertasso of the NMITE in Hereford for his kind invitation to visit and tour the institutes Skylon Campus. The visit provided an excellent opportunity to see at first hand the tremendous work the institute and its students are engaged with in advancing timber offsite construction in the United Kingdom and abroad. The New Model Institute for Technology and Engineering (NMITE) is the UK's first new higher education provider for over 40 years. The Bond Bryan designed and Speller Metcalfe delivered exemplar building is a truly inspiring educational building for students and staff alike, the facility housing 2no 700msq workshops, The Centre for Advanced Timber Technology (CATT) and Centre for Automated Manufacturing (CAM), 5no studios and breakout spaces - all designed with flexibility in mind. The site is a flagship site for the Department for Education trials for their new 'GenZ' teaching workshops. The visit was a reciprocal invitation following the highly successful visit by NMITE students to the Innovaré Offsite Limited mmc manufacturing facility in Coventry earlier in the month. #collaborativeworking #sharedlearning #researchanddevelopment #advancement #educationalarchitecture #inspiration

Proud to help bring together a room of inspiring women to discuss Shaping Futures of Women in Science. We held discussions around Urban v Suburban Labs : What works best & Work life balance : is it achievable? The conversations were frank and honest. Lots of interesting perspectives and what works individually and collectively. It’s important to remember we all function differently and how we get to our end goal may differ but we achieve and succeed and we should celebrate this . Thank you to Laura Sherliker Karen D. & Sarah Frankland for helping pull this together. Ilona Alcock for facilitating the conversations brilliantly & a massive thank you to all who attended and gave their time to help shape the discussions. I look forward to continuing these conversations in the future. 🌟 Practice of the Month: Bond Bryan 🌟 Kicking off with our first featured project, we’re proud to showcase Bond Bryan’s newly designed office space. Bond Bryan’s recent move to a carbon-conscious office in Sheffield city centre is a testament to their dedication to sustainability, community impact, and staff wellbeing. The new office exemplifies how thoughtful design can benefit both the environment and its occupants, aligning with our core values. By repurposing an existing building, they minimised the embodied carbon and achieved an EPC-C rating. Solar panels, energy-efficient lighting, and natural ventilation reduce operational carbon, while the design emphasises flexible working, collaboration, and staff wellness. Located in the heart of Sheffield, the office contributes to the city’s revitalisation and encourages sustainable commuting with excellent transport and cycling links. Key Highlights: 💡 Sustainability at the core: Repurposed building, solar panels, carbon-neutral materials like Burmatex carpet tiles. 🏢 Staff wellbeing focus: Flexible workspaces, collaborative zones, and a wellbeing room. ♻️Zero-demolition waste strategy: Donated surplus materials to schools and charities. 🌍 City-centre impact: Revitalises Sheffield’s economy and supports local businesses. ⚡Energy efficiency: Photovoltaic panels, low-energy lighting, and reduced desk space for flexible working. This project reflects Bond Bryan’s vision for a greener, more responsible practice, creating a space that aligns with our values while positively impacting the community and environment.
