Reclaiming Narratives🌿 I don’t see it as a privilege when I find myself as the only Black person in a space where others should be as well. I often ask myself why am I the only one here and what barriers keep others from being present. It was this internal dialogue that sparked the creation of Black Scottish Adventurers, a community I launched in 2022, which has now grown to over 3,000 members🌿. I was fortunate to discover the benefits of nature early in my time here, shortly after moving to Scotland over a decade ago. The lack of representation in Scotland’s outdoor spaces was striking, and I felt a responsibility to address it. I began having conversations within my community to better understand the challenges people face in connecting with the outdoors🌿🥾. If you’re wondering why does representation in the outdoors matter to you, well here’s one of the many reasons why. Representation in the outdoor spaces fosters inclusivity, challenges stereotypes, and ensures everyone feels welcomed to enjoy the benefits of nature, which will ultimately improve people’s physical and mental wellbeing, easing pressure on our NHS💙. Through my work with members of my community and key stakeholders in the outdoor sector, we’ve made strides in increasing representation in the outdoors; not only in Scotland but across the UK. Sharing our experiences has inspired others across the UK and beyond to begin their own connection with nature🙏🏼. I’m grateful for the dedication of our community members who show up for each adventure and connect with nature locally, the volunteer drivers who go above and beyond to improve access through our carpooling initiative, the leadership team who work tirelessly to educate and make each outdoor experience memorable, our sustainability ambassadors who continuously educate and challenge us to care for the environment, the outdoor organisations supporting our journey and to everyone cheering us on, thank you👏🏼. This month, I’ve reflected on how far we’ve come. While there’s more to do, I’m proud to see us Reclaiming the Narrative😊. Enoch Adeyemi & Joshua Adeyemi were at The Scottish Parliament recently to receive our confirmation of Black Scottish Adventurers being a finalist at the RSPB Nature of Scotland Awards 2024 🌿🎉 They met so many organisations and businesses in the environment space who are doing some fantastic work and what was obvious is the successes being delivered when businesses collaborate with non profits to drive meaningful and impactful change👏🏽🌿 We are finalists in the Health & Wellbeing Category and this speaks to the amount of work we do here in Scotland around supporting individuals to become more physically, financially and mentally healthy💙🌿 They met with Anne McCall, the director of RSPB Scotland and had a chance to tell her well done for putting all this awards together👏🏽👏🏽.
