We're pleased to see the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change publish a report on the opportunities for mRNA, following BIA’s report last year: mrnaexplainer.org. We believe mRNA has the potential to transform UK health innovation and welcomed the opportunity to share UK SMEs' perspectives to help shape TBI’s report. The more organisations championing UK health innovation, the better!
mRNA proved itself a life-saving technology in the development of Covid-19 vaccination. Today we can see its potential for building novel vaccines for infectious disease and therapeutics for cancer and rare diseases. The UK has all it needs to be world leading in mRNA technologies: world-class academic research institutions, a strong industry presence from biotech and pharma, an internationally respected regulatory framework through the MHRA, and a National Health Service that works closely with academia and industry to research and develop new treatments. However, to continue this positive trajectory the UK needs to demonstrate a clear end-to-end process for the design, manufacture, testing, regulation, procurement and delivery of these vaccines and therapeutics to the world. The Tony Blair Institute for Global Change has today set out the path to do this: https://lnkd.in/ehsPiWSv In this paper we lay out a series of recommendations, from building a series of ‘lab hotels’ to publishing first in the world regulations on mRNA and platform technologies. Of course there are other technologies and platforms that deserve our attention as well, but with mRNA having the most in trial in the European pipeline, and without tested delivery methods for personalised medicines, mRNA therapeutics are the ideal starting place to work out the delivery mechanism for 21st century medicine. If the UK gets this right, ultimately our patients will have access to personalised medicines with the potential to be more effective, and companies will continue to base themselves here bringing financial returns to the UK economy. It’s been a pleasure working on this with Dr. Lennard Lee- DPhil, FRCP Robert Watson Henry Li Dr Charlotte Refsum
