  • Agreed with Moritz Lehmann! 🤝 We’re thrilled to see how Starboard’s platform is being used to reveal insights into the crucial role of krill in marine ecosystems. Though krill may not appeal to human taste buds—scientists in the Southern Ocean often say you can smell a dense patch from miles away—they are a fundamental link in one of Earth’s most efficient food chains: 🌊 Phytoplankton (microscopic) → 🦐 Krill (centimeters) → 🐋 Whales (up to 30 meters) This simple chain highlights how the smallest organisms sustain the largest, supporting an entire marine ecosystem. Today, krill are also widely used in animal feed, and as fish farming expands worldwide, the demand for krill has likely grown to meet the protein needs of human diets. Fantastic work using Starboard Maritime Intelligence data to deepen our understanding of these connections! We look forward to following your research journey.

CCAMLR meeting deemed a “backwards step” due to obstructionist Chinese and Russian vetoes The 2024 meeting of the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR) concluded on October 25 without approving any significant proposals following several vetoes by member states Russia and China. Using the Starboard Maritime Intelligence platform, Semaphore analysis of the last three Antarctic Krill (Euphausia superba) fishing seasons has revealed a 31% year-on-year increase in fishing efforts during the 2024 season. Driven primarily by a 116% year-on-year increase in Chinese-flagged fishing efforts, the 2024 season was additionally the first fishing season with a Russian-flagged Antarctic Krill fishing vessel present during the observation period. These changes demonstrate Chinese and Russian interest in the fishery, which very likely influenced their votes at the recent CCAMLR meeting. With a projected compound annual growth rate of over 10%, the demand for krill oil will likely result in similar obstructionist maneuvers at future CCAMLR meetings and will likely increase competition over established catch limits during future fishing seasons. • The curriculum of the 2024 CAPFISH Summer Academy is packed to deliver information and tools needed to tackle #IUU #fishing and related problems to the next generation of leaders. Moritz Lehmann will discuss the loophole for high seas transshipments in the WCPFC. By explaining a scientific approach to the analysis of vessel behaviour, he will empower the attendees to work similar problems in their jurisdictions. We're grateful to the World Maritime University for the invite and look forward to seeing everyone next week!

  • Illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing costs billions of dollars per year. This practice is enabled by vessels obfuscating their identity, such as frequent reflagging, complex ownership structures, and flags of convenience (Park et al. 2023). By combining data from many registers, identifying discrepancies, and facilitating information sharing, CRAVT helps to make the global fishing fleet more transparent and accountable. All with #free and #open access. The web interface is clear and intuitive. Huge kudos to the IMCS Network team! #illegalfishing #IUU #fishing

The CRAVT is now available to any and all! The CRAVT can be used to search for specific vessels or browse groups of vessels including by flag, vessel type or RFMO or RFB. The CRAVT identifies where differences exist between RFMO or RFB records for a specific vessel. Users may also search Vessel Contacts (vessel companies and vessel masters) for a specific vessel. A huge thanks to Tony Miller and his team at Eighty Options for their development work and to Huskii Studio for their design work. Thanks also to the RFMOs and RFBs that worked with the team to get the CRAVT established - the Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission (WCPFC), the Pacific Islands Forum Fisheries Agency (FFA), the North Pacific Fisheries Commission, CCSBT and IOTC, the Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission (IATTC). • Good morning Singapore! When it comes to the real-time #risk detection of #subsea communication cables and other maritime #assets, the Starboard platform provides clear and actionable information. Talk to Mat Brown and Trent Fulcher at Submarine Networks World today and tomorrow at the Suntec Singapore Convention Centre. Also check out our expert webinars on this topic: Expert insights with Moritz Lehmann: Discover how persistent satellite imagery, oceanographic data, and Starboard’s evolving alerting framework can identify real-time risks in your area of interest and support planning for offshore asset development like wind farms and cable landings. https://lnkd.in/gbXbJJaq From fish to fibre: Applying maritime domain awareness technology to the protection of subsea cables: Andy Hovey, Partha Ghosh and Jim Thomason examine how maritime domain awareness technology and data, and the intelligence cycle can be applied to the protection of subsea cables. https://lnkd.in/gTunJzSm
