How can you strike the balance between technical innovation and meeting privacy obligations in an AI world? At the recent IAPP ANZ Summit event in Melbourne, DataMasque hosted a panel discussion on ‘Striking the balance: The intersection between privacy and technology’. It will come as no surprise that AI was a key focus area. Here are a few of the key takeaways from our panel: - Getting the foundations right is critical. The introduction of AI is forcing organisations to take a closer look at their data governance policies. - Data is at the centre of AI. It’s important to understand what information is being shared, who has access and where is it stored. - Models are hungry for data. It came across loud and clear that we shouldn’t be exposing customer data to models. Techniques like masking exist to help you to deidentify the data and remove the privacy risk while maintaining its value so that it can be used for model training. - Cyber, data and privacy need to work closely together, bringing healthy tension and debate to come up with solutions that ensure their organisation can leverage these new technologies while meeting compliance and privacy obligations. Thank you to Nick Kervin from BDO in Australia and Sudarshan Narasimhan from Amazon Web Services (AWS) who joined Peter Joint from DataMasque on the panel, hosted by Grant de Leeuw.
