Webinar: SULTAN HAJI OMAR ‘ALI SAIFUDDIEN BRIDGE - The longest bridge in Southeast Asia Date & Time: 27 November 2024, at 12.30 pm (MYT) Overview: The Temburong Bridge Project, now known as the Sultan Haji Omar Ali Saifuddien (SOAS) Bridge is a significant infrastructure project in Brunei, connecting the capital city, Bandar Seri Begawan, to the Temburong district, which previously had no direct land link to the rest of the country. This project involves the construction of a cable-stayed bridge spanning approximately 30 kilometers over the Brunei Bay, aiming to facilitate easier access and promote economic development in the region. Key Objectives: • Understand the engineering and design aspects of the Temburong Bridge. • Learn about the project's benefits for local communities and the economy. • Explore future opportunities for development and tourism in the Temburong district. • Discuss challenges faced during construction and how they were overcome. Details of Speakers Speaker: Nadia Amer Nadia is a graduate member of PUJA with a BSc in Quantity Surveying from the University of Salford, UK. She has worked for 3 years as an Assistant Quantity Surveyor at Hanafi Konsaltan, where she was exposed to various projects ranging from commercial and residential buildings to sewage systems, and on this Webinar’s topic - Package CC4 of the Temburong Bridge project. She currently is and has spent the last 4 years working in the Oil & Gas Sector as a Cost Engineer for Brunei Shell Petroleum (on secondment via Utamacon (B) Sdn Bhd). Speaker: Ahsha Roslim Ahsha Roslim is a graduate member of PUJA and an Assistant Project Executive at Utamacon (B) Sdn Bhd. She is currently an MSc research candidate focusing on sustainability practices in waste management at Universiti Teknologi Brunei and holds a BSc in Quantity Surveying from Taylors University, Malaysia. Ahsha combines her academic knowledge with practical experience, enhancing her skills in cost management, quantity surveying, and sustainable practices. Sustainable Quantity Surveying Practices in Sri Lanka (https://lnkd.in/g8-JfUqq) In the PAQS Congress 2024, Sri Lanka presented their country's remarkable progress in sustainable construction. Some key highlights: -Sigiriya, one of the 8th Wonders of the World, showcases ancient sustainable practices like gravity-fed water systems and architectural designs blending with nature. -Sri Lanka has established over 400 government entities dedicated to sustainability across sectors, providing incentives for green buildings and renewable energy. -The Green Building Council of Sri Lanka (GBCSL) is at the forefront, developing rating systems like GREENSL® to promote eco-friendly design and construction. -Sri Lanka has seen a steady rise in LEED and GREENSL® certified buildings, including pioneering projects like the world's first LEED-certified factory and the country's highest-rated green residential building. Quantity surveyors in Sri Lanka are playing a key role in integrating sustainability through lifecycle costing, value engineering, green certification assistance, and promoting sustainable materials/practices. The Institute of Quantity Surveyors Sri Lanka (IQSSL) is also actively contributing by setting standards, conducting research, and advising the government. It's inspiring to see the strides Sri Lanka is making towards a more sustainable built environment. There are valuable lessons here for quantity surveyors and construction professionals globally. Let's continue learning from each other's sustainability journeys! #SustainableConstruction #QuantitySurveying #GreenBuildings #SriLanka #PAQS2024

The Ikatan Quantity Surveyor Indonesia (IQSI) recently released a comprehensive report on Indonesia's progress towards sustainable construction in 2023. Some key highlights from the report include: Indonesia introduced several impactful regulations promoting carbon capture projects, smart buildings, and renewable energy initiatives. High-profile green construction case studies in the country were examined, like Pertamina's CCS plants and various certified smart office buildings in Jakarta. Insights were provided into emerging sustainable practices by major Indonesian companies in their own operations. The report also outlined the important role that quantity surveyors can play in supporting national sustainability goals through practices like life cycle costing and carbon budgeting. It was encouraging to learn about the advances Indonesia has made on the regulatory and industry levels. As Ikatan Quantity Surveyor Indonesia, they no doubt influence sustainability across the sector. For others dedicated to maximizing social value, IQSI's report provides a useful framework on one of Southeast Asia's largest construction markets. details: https://lnkd.in/gPmHQeDR

The Building Surveyors Institute of Japan (BSIJ) recently shared insightful updates on progress towards green buildings at the PAQS Sustainability Committee meeting. Some highlights from the report include: The Institute for Built Environment and Carbon Neutral (IBEC) is conducting impactful research initiatives using tools like BEST, CASBEE and newly established J-CAT. CASBEE, Japan's leading green building certification system, saw nearly 900 projects certified in 2023 across various schemes. Prominent organizations like Green Building Japan are supporting adoption of global standards while facilitating cross-industry collaboration. BSIJ also outlined the Japanese government's aim to achieve carbon neutrality in buildings by 2050 through strengthening existing energy standards and incentives over the next decade. It was interesting to learn about Japan's robust framework for driving sustainability in the built sector through policy, technical guidelines and industry forums. As stakeholders on large construction projects, quantity surveyors no doubt play a role in this transition. For others focused on minimizing environmental impact, BSIJ's report provides useful insights into approaches taken by one of Asia's most developed markets. Their leadership in assessing progress will be important to follow. https://lnkd.in/gi7pDmad

At the recent PAQS Sustainability Committee meeting in August 2024, the Royal Institution of Surveyors Malaysia (RISM) introduced the new MalaysiaGBC Carbon Score evaluation tool. RISM highlighted the Carbon Score, which was developed by the Malaysia Green Building Council (MalaysiaGBC) as a self-assessment checklist to measure organizational carbon footprints. The tool aims to help built environment firms gain insights into emissions sources from their operations. By completing the checklist, users can track sustainability performance over time. MalaysiaGBC hopes the Carbon Score will encourage the industry to take action on reducing environmental impacts. With construction contributing significantly to national emissions, engaging stakeholders on sustainability is important. While RISM only introduced the Carbon Score at the meeting, it was positive to see the leading professional body bring awareness to this new resource. The initiative from MalaysiaGBC has potential to drive progress on climate goals within the built environment sector. For details pls visit https://lnkd.in/g9iCzjnN

Following the recent Sustainability Committee Meeting in Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei, the Philippine Institute of Certified Quantity Surveyors (PICQS) has released an insightful report on advancing sustainable development in the Philippines. Some key highlights from the report: The Philippines has risen to 92nd in achieving the UN's 17 Sustainable Development Goals, but still faces challenges in addressing poverty, hunger, and education quality. The UN has identified strategic priorities around human capital development, sustainable and inclusive economic growth, climate action and environmental protection to accelerate progress on these goals by 2028. PICQS is conducting a carbon footprint survey of its members globally to raise awareness on sustainability issues and encourage lifestyle shifts to reduce environmental impacts. Useful resources were shared on Philippine initiatives like the Philippine Green Building Council and Philippine Green Building Initiative to promote sustainable construction practices. As the leading professional body for quantity surveyors in the country, PICQS is committed to upholding principles of sustainability. We are pleased to see them evaluating progress on the UN SDGs and taking active steps to engage members on reducing their carbon footprint. Their leadership in this area will be important for the industry and in helping the Philippines meet its development targets. To read the full report, visit https://lnkd.in/gFQxqe_R.
