On the eve of my first trip to Malaysia, I spoke to my dad who visited in 2003 and told him that we now have 53 hotels in the country. He laughed and said, “I remember when we had two.” More than 20 years later, I experienced the same unique culture and saw how we’ve expanded the breadth and depth of our portfolio in this popular Southeast Asian destination. A tour with Rajeev Menon brought us to hotels in Penang, Kuala Lumpur, and Langkawi – including the grand opening of our 50th property in Malaysia, the Marriott Penang Complex. We indulged in the renowned street food – my favorite was the nasi lemak, a breakfast staple with coconut milk rice, eggs, and spicy chili paste – and visited the UNESCO World Heritage Site of George Town. In Kuala Lumpur, we were honored to meet with the Prime Minister of Malaysia, His Excellency Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim, to talk about attracting travelers to the country and how Marriott International is helping to create employment opportunities locally with each new property in our portfolio. Malaysia has so much to offer – the cities, resort destinations, culinary experiences, and ecotourism – and I hope to come back and visit with my family one day. My dad was excited to hear about our incredible growth and the continued strength of the Marriott culture in Malaysia.
