According to the International Energy Agency (2023), SEA will increase its urban population by 23% (from 355 to 435 million) between 2023 and 2035. In the same period, the number of air-conditioning units will increase five-fold from 37 to 186 million. Such big increments point to a need for stronger efficiency standards and more innovations to reduce energy use by both new and old buildings.
