Paving Our Way To A Sustainable Future

About us

Magorium is a deep-tech start-up with a solution to the world’s plastic waste problem. Our technology converts contaminated and unsorted plastic - into a new road construction material to pave greener roads. This aims to solve the plastic waste crisis and create a more sustainable construction sector using waste-derived materials. We aim to disrupt the waste and construction material industry through innovation by: 1) Existing as a solution to the most problematic stream of contaminated and mixed plastic waste 2) Replacing current materials for road infrastructure construction. In doing so, reduce Singapore’s reliance on import and depletion of natural and finite crude-based resources for construction

The future of biopharmaceutical manufacturing is right here in Singapore with Sanofi's new S$800m Modulus facility! It can produce four different vaccines or biopharmaceuticals simultaneously, with production lines that reconfigure in days instead of months.    This highly digitalised facility isn't just smart - it's sustainable too! Its roads are built in collaboration with local startup Magorium Pte. Ltd. using recycled plastic from insulin pens 🌱 Beyond manufacturing, Sanofi is also partnering with A*STAR - Agency for Science, Technology and Research and the National Skin Centre on pioneering acne treatment research – a prevalent condition that affects 80% of teens and 40% of adults, globally.    These partnerships demonstrate how Singapore's complete ecosystem - from advanced manufacturing to research expertise and sustainability innovation - can accelerate healthcare solutions. Thank you to Health Minister Ong Ye Kung for gracing the inauguration.    Looking forward to more groundbreaking healthcare innovations emerging from our biomedical sciences ecosystem! 🧪🔬    #Healthcare #Innovation #Manufacturing #Biopharma #Sustainability

Sanofi’s new S$800m manufacturing facility in Singapore will produce a wide variety of medicines and can complete a product changeover in a matter of days, rather than months. Aptly named Modulus, the plant is Asia’s first modular concept manufacturing facility and can produce up to four different biopharmaceuticals and vaccines simultaneously, allowing critical life-saving therapies and vaccines to be manufactured and scaled rapidly for patients globally. The highly digitalised, low-carbon facility features 34 standardised production modules with interconnected equipment, allowing for greater manufacturing flexibility to support pandemic preparedness. Besides adopting sustainable manufacturing practices and green technology like solar panels, recycled materials were also used in the construction of the facility – the site’s roads are built with recycled plastic from insulin pens in collaboration with local startup Magorium Pte. Ltd.. This next-generation plant will create approximately 200 specialised roles across bioprocessing, #automation, #AI, and bioinformatics. The Singapore site is part of our growing #biopharmaceutical sector, which produced over S$19b worth of high-value medicines and healthcare solutions for global markets in 2022. Building plastic waste roads at Magorium | An Unreasonable Fellow | ASEAN Youth Fellowship 2024

A commonality between 44 fellows from 11 countries is Difference. Despite this difference, in just one pre-briefing and seven days, strangers became friends and eventually family. This bond was made more exquisite by the diversity of backgrounds, languages and experiences of individuals in the ASEAN Youth Fellowship. From the AYF 2024, I learnt that difference is a precarious balance with the power to either unite or divide. An overwhelming safe space of trust, respect and compassion created by Aaron Maniam encouraged fellows to learn, collaborate and share without judgement, uniting us as an AYF family. An insightful panel during this fellowship contextualised difference in ASEAN as a disparate region of varying economic developments, dissimilar markets and diverse culture. We can either harness these differences, gain insights to co-create solutions and develop an attractive global market or reject these differences, allowing it to divide us into vulnerable silos. Personally, what cemented the fellowship's unity was witnessing the National Youth Council Singapore and Singapore International Foundation leaders and team including David Chua, Hasliza Ahmad, Michelle Ling, Christie Lee, Farah H. Sanwari, Aniza Yusope, Joanne Xiao, Jia Zhi Lim, Jessica Song and Aaron embody leadership, inclusivity and empathy at every turn. From their interactions with the fellows to event staff and local guides in Laos, they truly led by example, discovering and celebrating differences to bring out the best in everyone. The extraordinariness of this AYF 2024 was a culmination of inspiring leadership, a resolute embrace of differences and exceedingly wacky humour (courtesy of Theerapat Ungsuchaval and Jia Yee Tan). I am honoured and beyond grateful to be a part of this experience. ❤️

Building plastic waste roads at Magorium | An Unreasonable Fellow | ASEAN Youth Fellowship 2024

June has been a non-stop insightful month of sustainability themed dialogues and engagements.🌲 Apart from the opportunity to exhibit at the CleanEnviro Summit Singapore, I was invited to share in both the  "Closing the Loop: Insights into End-to-End Sustainability Solutions" panel by Enterprise Singapore with fellow panelists Agnes L, Pei Kang Ng and Jade Loh from SATS Ltd, TRIA Solutions and Plaspulp Union Pte Ltd respectively, moderated by the Meng Yi BAY 马明义 from Singapore Environment Council (SEC) who facilitated a refreshingly candid conversation on sustainability transitions for businesses in Singapore and "Embarking on a Research and Innovation Journey" panel by Urban Solutions & Sustainability Innovation & Enterprise Office (USS IEO) with fellow panelists, Dong Xuecheng, Lip Teng Ho, Spencer Soong and Richard Goh from A*STAR - Agency for Science, Technology and Research, Thriving Weeds, KLerra and Amazon Web Services (AWS) respectively, moderated by Tina Chua delving into the root problems of waste and creating eco-systems as a solution through collaborations between research institutes and organisations. The following week, I had the immense honour of sharing at the "The Circular Economy in Action - Key Success Factors" panel moderated by Annie Koh, PhD at the 2024 World Green and Sustainability Summit by KSI Strategic Institute for Asia Pacific in Penang with Adj. Practice Professor Cheah Kok Hoong, Prof Major Dato Engr Chin Yew Sin, JP and Hyuk-Tae Kwon. It was excellently moderated by Prof Annie through engaging conversations, allowing the audience to glean insights from diverse stakeholder perspectives on creating sustainable businesses and impact. The month ended with a discussion on Sentosa Development Corporation's virtual panel on "Sustainability Tech and Innovation" with Chi Chuan Poh and arthur huang, moderated by Veerappan Swaminathan which focused on sustainability and tourism. An interesting point shared was that carbon emissions from the tourism sector was probably most successfully reduced during the covid-19 worldwide lockdown. How do we then solve this inherent conflict between industry development and pursuing sustainability goals? I truly appreciate the diverse representation in each panel as they bring distinctly unique opinions to these discussions. More important than ever, everyone within the sustainability space should be heard such that future proposed solutions or policy changes are sufficiently comprehensive without any segment falling through the cracks.

Magorium’s innovative process for giving this plastic waste a second life offers a beacon of hope for tackling the global plastic waste problem while reducing our dependence on finite resources. Having paved roads with this new material from Tuas to Sentosa, Oh isn’t stopping there. Her vision for Magorium stretches beyond the nation’s shores, with plans to revolutionise road construction on a regional, and even global scale. How have design and creativity shaped her journey?
