Challenging EU policies to make them work for people in poverty

About us

The European Union is a global player, and EU policies have an impact on people worldwide. This is why Oxfam challenges EU policies so they work for people in poverty. One person in three in the world lives in poverty. Oxfam is determined to change that world by mobilizing the power of people against poverty. The EU's global impact goes far beyond development policies. In Oxfam's EU office, we work to influence key decision-makers to ensure that EU policies on tax, bioenergy, migration, climate change and other issues work for those most in need. The EU office is part of the Oxfam International Secretariat, which supports and coordinates the work of national Oxfam affiliates and Oxfam country teams around the world. The EU office also works together with with civil society allies from Brussels and beyond.

New Oxfam Brief, "Putting an End to World Hunger". Farmers worldwide grow more than enough to feed everyone on the planet. Yet, since 2017, hunger has surged sharply. Oxfam's new brief looks at the EU's role in transforming the global food system. There are many ways the EU can address hunger: ✅ Invest in small-scale farmers ✅ Revise biofuel policies to phase out food-based fuels ✅ Tax windfall profits of agri-food giants ✅ Ensure workers earn a living income Read the full report 👉 https://lnkd.in/e4UahQkY

  • 📣 European Commission's Proposals for Farmers: Well-Intentioned but Lacking Ambition. The European Commission recently published two new legislative proposals aimed at strengthening the position of farmers and increasing transparency in food value chains. These initiatives include a reform of the Common Market Organisation (CMO) regulation and measures to strengthen cooperation between authorities responsible for combating unfair trading practices (UTPs). They are part of the European Commission's response to farmers' demands for fair prices and to end the practice of purchasing products below production costs. Oxfam welcomes the proposals but urges for an ambitious revision of Unfair Trade Practices legislation by the end of 2025! The EU must introduce:  ✔️ Sustainability criteria in production costs calculation. ✔️ Protection for farmers in the Global South. ✔️ Collaboration between EU and non-EU authorities to ensure fairness and transparency across global supply chains. • A big congratulations to Marita Hutjes from Oxfam Novib on her new role as co-chair of the board at Climate Action Network (CAN) Europe.    We look forward to seeing how her dedication and work on fighting the climate crisis and inequality will bring us all closer to achieving climate action goals.

Manager Climate Justice and Inequality at Oxfam Novib

💚 I have worked for many years at the nexus of climate change, inequality and social justice at Oxfam and in other places. I’ve seen CAN Europe transform itself from a group working on climate action to a powerful network that puts climate justice at its heart. 🌱🌱 I am delighted that the network and the board have accepted Ester Asin Martinez and I to become the two new co-chairs of the CAN Europe Board. In sharing the role between us, we hope to show the strengths of joint feminist leadership. We want to put our combined experience, energy and time into supporting the great people at the CAN EU secretariat, its director Chiara Martinelli and the CAN Europe network to achieve their dreams and goals. 🙌 And thanks to Josianne Gauthier for charting the course before us.
