New Oxfam Brief, "Putting an End to World Hunger". Farmers worldwide grow more than enough to feed everyone on the planet. Yet, since 2017, hunger has surged sharply. Oxfam's new brief looks at the EU's role in transforming the global food system. There are many ways the EU can address hunger: ✅ Invest in small-scale farmers ✅ Revise biofuel policies to phase out food-based fuels ✅ Tax windfall profits of agri-food giants ✅ Ensure workers earn a living income Read the full report 👉 https://lnkd.in/e4UahQkY

Oxfam's recent report “Putting An End To World Hunger – The European Union’s role in transforming the global food system” underscores a stark reality: farmers worldwide produce more than enough food to feed everyone, yet hunger continues to rise. Since 2017, global hunger has sharply increased, highlighting the urgent need for action. The European Union (EU) holds a pivotal role in shaping the future of the global food system. As the report points out, smallholder farmers in the Global South have enormous potential to combat hunger, but they need far better support to realize this. By investing in these farmers and ensuring climate justice, the EU can lead efforts to transform the global food system into one that is more sustainable, equitable, and resilient to climate change. Key actions include: > Supporting smallholder farmers in the Global South to tackle hunger. > Addressing climate change’s impact on food security. > Ending unsustainable land use that fuels inequality. > Breaking corporate control in food systems and enhancing fair global food governance. #foodsecurity #SDG2 #europe #humanitarian https://lnkd.in/dEKD6D2R

🌾 Global food security rests on whether #FamilyFarmers are helped to adapt or left adrift in the face of escalating #ClimateImpacts, says Elizabeth Nsimadala, President of the Eastern Africa Farmers Federation. She calls for more #ClimateFinance to be targeted at the grassroots - including family farmers organisations - where it can have the most impact. Find out more ⤵ https://lnkd.in/dHvz4c2C

Couldn’t agree more with James Murray - 31% of UK land is grassland and 17% rough grazing - both in the main for the nearly 1m tonnes of beef, 1m tonnes of pork and 302k tonnes of lamb and mutton we raise for food a year. At a ridiculous protein input to output ratio (beef requires a 54:1 energy input to protein output). On top of which a lot of cereal land grows fodder for meat production. It’s an insane system for land use, nature, human health and protein production.
Really interesting report out today from Green Alliance on the crucial role alternative proteins could play in bolstering food security. Those lobbying against solar farms and rewilding projects on food security grounds will surely also call for less meat and dairy-rich diets and greater investment in alternative protein development, right? https://lnkd.in/gsZqgUcR
Are alternative proteins a solution to Britain's food security challenges?

Hello, Climate Fellows! Did you know that despite its popularity, cocoa farming in Africa faces serious challenges? Over two million smallholder farmers in West Africa depend on cocoa for their livelihoods, yet many live in poverty due to market imbalances and environmental degradation. Cocoa production has been linked to deforestation, biodiversity loss, and soil depletion. To address these issues, certification programs like Fairtrade have been introduced. But while they aim to improve farmer incomes and sustainability, the benefits often don’t reach everyone equally. In 2020, the "Living Income Differential" was introduced in Ghana and Cote d'Ivoire to boost cocoa farmers' income. However, resistance from international buyers led to reduced demand, cancelling out the intended benefits. This highlights the complexity of balancing market forces with fair compensation for farmers. What lessons can we learn from this? Sustainable solutions require collaboration across the entire supply chain, ensuring fairness for farmers and protecting the environment. What’s your take on this issue? How can we support cocoa farmers while promoting sustainability? Let us know in the comments! Yesterday the African Union adopted a 10-year action plan serving as a roadmap for transformational change. Some key elements: 1) commitment to triple domestic production and distribution of both organic and inorganic fertilizers ensuring they reach 70% of small holder farmers across the continent; 2) commitment to reverse land degradation and restoring soil health on at least 30% of degraded soils by 2033; 3) governments to create an enabling environment to attract more private sector investments

More than 900 million people go to bed hungry every night. The current #FoodCrisis is probably the worst in a decade. With the consequences of #climatechange coinciding with #TradeRestrictions and #conflict, years of progress in the battle against #hunger are being rapidly reversed. In a world that produces enough #food for everyone, with the #resources available to distribute it, should never accept #hunger as an immutable fact of life. No one should worry about where their next #meal is coming from, or if it’s coming at all.#ZeroHunger #SDG2 International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) FAO World Food Programme Food for the Hungry, Inc. 🧑🌾If there’s one lesson to learn from the #farmer protests across Europe this past year, it’s that our current agricultural system needs a real change. ❌The frustration of our farmers is real and justified. But we believe that quick-fix solutions, like cutting back on green initiatives, are not the answer. These short-term measures only push us further from achieving an economically and environmentally sustainable food system. 🌿We need to support our farmers in transitioning to #organic and #regenerative practices. But how can this happen without the necessary funding? 💰It’s time to ensure farmers receive fair prices for their produce and that EU subsidies (like the #CAP) finance real ecological transitions instead of maintaining the status quo. 🤗 Now is the moment to gather our crowd and make conscious choices that drive us toward a more resilient, healthy and fair food system for all. - #gatheryourcrowd #itstimetoact #EUelections2024 #useyourvote

At #COP29, my message is clear: we need an ambitious climate #adaptation goal and focus on how the poorest #communities, who are more being impacted, can benefit. If we are going to have a successful #energy and sustainable #foodsystems transition, individual #communities need to reap and feel the benefits. Climate #adaptation investments are not a sunk cost. They save lives and support #livelihoods and are key to address #inequality. Extreme heat, too much or too little #water are threatening the #livelihoods of small-scale food producers who supply over a third of the world's #food. In Brazil, #coffee production was hit by historic drought. In Ghana, erratic rains cut #cocoa production by half. And in Southern #Africa, #maize harvests are well below average due to an historic dry spell. In many #commodities and #crops this is also impacting #food prices. Food #inflation across developed and developing economies will alway impact more those #communities with lower incomes and who are less #resilient to these shocks. So here in #Baku, as world leaders work toward new climate #finance goals, International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) is advocating for a truly ambitious commitment to support small-scale #farmers. Investing in food producers' resilience is not only the right thing to do – it's an #investment with a business and #social return. Simon Stiell Ralien Bekkers Jay Collins Sean Kidney Rania A.
