The hub recently facilitated a trip for JCU researcher Mohammad Jahanbakht to visit a property in the Richmond shire to collect drone footage and images of prickly acacia. This data will be used to help train an Artificial Intelligence model to identify and map out prickly acacia for weed control measures. Mohmmad said the field work has helped him ‘to better understand the scale of the problem’ faced by graziers. Prickly acacia poses a significant threat to Queensland’s environment and agriculture industry if not managed properly. “There's a lot of use of drones right across the agricultural industry at the moment. A lot of graziers and pastoralists have their own drones… So we wanted to look at the potential to automate a drone-based image analysis of assessing land condition.” David Phelps, Director, TNQ Drought Hub. High resolution photos captured from drones can provide a wealth of information about the health and condition of a paddock, such as the amount and distribution of pasture and weeds, as well as the location of roads, cattle pads, fences and watering points. Southern Gulf NRM, James Cook University, Australia and MaxusAI, supported by the TNQ Drought Hub, have been trialing the potential of this new technology on the identification and classification of Mitchell grass tussocks in the Southern Gulf rangelands areas. 🎞️ Watch now: https://lnkd.in/gFwxzEJy This collaborative project is a part of the Australian Government’s Future Drought Fund ‘Managing Rangelands for Drought Resilience project’ which brings together six Drought Hubs to showcase technologies and techniques that use mapping to improve rangeland management across Australia.
